✯ – with a sudden urge to cuddle

He wasn’t entirely sure what he was doing, but he was walking and it was dark and he was just feeling really lonely.

Conan was — well, spending the night with one of his little friends. Safe, hopefully. And that was Shinichi’s fault, because he had sent him there after coming home from that case earlier in the day —

— because…

His throat hurt, and he finally stopped walking to rest his hand on the closest wall he could find, the front door of some poor person who most likely wouldn’t be very happy at seeing a stranger loitering in their yard. But he couldn’t bring himself to move again, so he sat down on their front porch and wrapped his arms around his legs, bringing them up and curling in on himself.

That was too close for comfort.

Cases with child victims always hit the hardest, but this was —

This time he was exactly Conan’s age and even went to the same school. They didn’t look anything alike or share anything in common, but Conan himself was only one park away from the incident, and the murderer — that delighted look was…

Shinichi choked.

Definitely one of his least favorite cases.

Usually Shinichi would jump, or at least react instantly, to the unexpected presence of a new person, but he just couldn’t bring himself to do it this time.

Though somewhere in his mind, he wondered just what this person was even doing outside at two in the morning.

… Not that it was any of his business.

He felt the need to engorge himself in human contact — something warm and alive, and while he would much rather prefer Conan than some poor person whose house he had just randomly chosen to sit at (though they didn’t seem angry, which was a small relief), it was his fault that Conan wasn’t available for the night in the first place.

“I’m…” He swallowed thickly. “I’m fine. Sorry for intruding.”

And he wanted to leave this poor person alone and leave, but — he couldn’t move, no matter how much he wanted to.

“Ah, it’s okay. I don’t really mind…”

Kaito stood with the door open for a moment before sighing and pushing it shut. He walked over to the detective and carefully lowered himself, sitting cross-legged a short ways from the other. The magician knew the teen was lying, and he was not about to let the guy push him aside without knowing the reason for the detective’s low spirits.

“Sorry if I’m being blunt, but sitting on the ground with your knees pulled up, looking like a sad puppy does not seem like you’re ‘fine’ to me,” He tilted his head and smiled at the other, “And I can’t just ignore someone at my front door who might need help. I’m not sure how much I can do, but at the very least, I can listen.”
