It had been a long day.

Basil was stuck under a bus stop, scowling, a late afternoon shower having started and him without an umbrella. He tapped his foot in irritation, chin resting in his palm as he watched the rain.

The evidence they’d been counting on had been too damaged to ascertain anything from it, and their only lead was lost.

But if he’d been a bit more careful in preserving it—!

He was expecting anything but the slightly rough brush of his hair. The scientist initially glanced up in confusion, though he wasn’t going to stop the other— it was the distraction he wanted. And it felt good.

“…Why’d you do that?”

Basil drew the bug near his face and inspected it as it crawled.

“Well I’m glad it didn’t get wet.”

Glancing towards the boy who sat next to him the scientist lowered his hand and gave a nervous laugh.

“I wasn’t… really paying attention, just, thinking about stuff. It was alright though, I didn’t mind!”

His grey eyes drifted back towards the rainstorm, they usually didn’t last too long, so the two of them would be freed soon. Though he was curious.

“Why are you in a small town like this anyway? If I can ask—”

“I was visiting the city, actually. Heard about this town and thought it might make a good place to take a small break.”

He gave a slightly embarrassed smile as he looked out at the water falling outside the small covered area.

“Though… I may have underestimated exactly how wet it would be. Would’ve brought an umbrella…”

The magician paused for a moment, then put his arms behind his head and looked over at the other, curious. “So…. Can I ask what you were thinking that got you so distracted?”
