✯ – with a sudden urge to cuddle

He wasn’t entirely sure what he was doing, but he was walking and it was dark and he was just feeling really lonely.

Conan was — well, spending the night with one of his little friends. Safe, hopefully. And that was Shinichi’s fault, because he had sent him there after coming home from that case earlier in the day —

— because…

His throat hurt, and he finally stopped walking to rest his hand on the closest wall he could find, the front door of some poor person who most likely wouldn’t be very happy at seeing a stranger loitering in their yard. But he couldn’t bring himself to move again, so he sat down on their front porch and wrapped his arms around his legs, bringing them up and curling in on himself.

That was too close for comfort.

Cases with child victims always hit the hardest, but this was —

This time he was exactly Conan’s age and even went to the same school. They didn’t look anything alike or share anything in common, but Conan himself was only one park away from the incident, and the murderer — that delighted look was…

Shinichi choked.

Definitely one of his least favorite cases.

He was glad that the one person who happened to have noticed him was the one crazy enough to not mind him sitting on their front porch at three in the morning — not that he would say it out loud.

Shinichi grumbled and pulled his knees closer and he recalled the earlier events of the night. “I wasn’t lying — I really am fine.” It was the truth, but the reason he was so down was because —

“There was a murder a few hours ago.”

There. He swallowed. Now that he had started, there was no going back. “A little boy. Six years old. It was a mess. One that seemed it could only be brought about by an awful accident.”

But it wasn’t.

“…I see…”

A bad taste rose in his mouth as the detective mentioned the murder. He himself hadn’t see nearly as many as the other likely had, but any death, especially of someone so young, was jarring. And since the detective had said it was a murder, obviously, it wasn’t as accidental as it had looked…. Which only made it worse. And considering how old tantei-kun was…

Kaito was starting to see why Shinichi seemed so depressed right now.

“…You know… even if you’re okay physically, you definitely aren’t emotionally, else you wouldn’t be sitting here curled up at some random person’s front door.”

He paused for a moment before shifting his position, moving next to the other. The magician wasn’t touching the teen just yet, but he was hopefully close enough to provide some comfort.

“You don’t have to continue, if you don’t want. I wouldn’t want to keep it on your mind. But if you feel like you need to get it off your chest, I don’t mind hearing about it.”
