The thief didn’t even cast a glance around as he approached. The police never set any officers here, even if they knew this was where they’d always find the stolen targets now. And it wasn’t like he had to worry much about anyone attacking him these days either…
He reached into a pocket, pulling out the peridot that had been placed in there about an hour ago. The gem was carefully set on top of the stone, and he took a step back, staring a moment before lowering himself, moving the cape back some as he did. He drew his knees up and sat in silence for a few minutes before finally speaking.
“I’m sorry… this one isn’t Pandora either…”
A small, sad smile appeared on his face.
“I was hoping that I could get it for you as a present, since that’s coming up soon… But it looks like I won’t be able to.”
His mouth started to waver, and the grin fell as he lowered his head, burying it in his knees as tears welled up and began falling.
“I’m sorry…”
