Why?
The thief clenched his teeth and led Shinichi over to the rooftop door as another shot bounced off the ground nearby, pulling it open and dragging the other close as they passed though.
Why are they here now?
He slammed the door shut behind them and leaned against it, breathing heavily with arms still wrapped protectively around the detective. He couldn’t even remember the last time snipers had been at his heists. Ever since they’d hired the assassin, there hadn’t been nearly as many run-ins with gunmen. Much less those that shot from afar. And now they’d put Shinichi in danger… Of course he would make sure the detective didn’t get hit.
After a moment, he loosened his hold to smile down at the other, trying to ignore the pain in his chest.
“Didn’t want you.. to get hurt… because of me… tantei-kun…”
“Stupid, idiot!” he managed out once they were safe in the hallway for the moment. It had taken a bit to not pound his fists against Kaito’s chest, careful of the wound that had to be bleeding. His heart was pounding and his head felt far too light, a little dizzy even but he was sure it was because of the panic that had bubbled up at the jerk of KID’s body when the bullet had hit.
How many nightmares had he dreamt of something like that happening? He’d lost count. His eyes stung with tears as he glared up at the white (and a bit red?) clad thief.
“T-that doesn’t give you the right to possibly die for me!”
Yes, a bit more red started to bleed through to stain the jacket now, a little off-center and in the lower section of the chest, though the area quickly got covered by a gloved hand. It hurt, but the adrenaline running though him kept him from feeling all of it. The situation demanded more of his attention. He clearly couldn’t go back out to the roof, but even if he could avoid the police like this from inside the building, that didn’t guarantee that he’d be safe leaving from the ground, either. Someone who’s been hit isn’t exactly the hardest to notice, and if the shooters were close enough, he’d just be a grounded target. And he couldn’t call for an ambulance or anything because of the same problem of standing out…
…But the detective gave him a few more options, if he could get the other to calm down. So Kid hugged Shinichi closer, holding the other’s head over his still beating – though at a slightly faster pace than normal – heart with his free hand as he smiled and leaned his head down over the detective.

“Well… thieves don’t always refrain… from what they don’t have rights… to do… now do they?”
The thief held him there a few moments before relaxing. He did know time was of the essence, just wanted to give Shinichi a chance to not panic right now. Would be best. Right. Now…
“…Don’t suppose you happen to have… a car we could use?”
