Kid sighed in relief as he stepped outside, gently rubbing an eye and closing the door behind him. Cutting the power had gone well, but he’d already done it so often in past heists that Nakamouri-keibu had some flood lights prepared…

That hadn’t been fun.

Even with the black contacts he’d taken to using, the lights were enough to make everything he saw fade into white… He was lucky he hadn’t run into anything after that, though he was certain he’d come close more than a few times. It seemed he still only see best when it was naturally dark. Not too bad, considering he worked best at night, but it was still annoying for school and other things he had to do during the day… Did help with the electric bill, though.

The thief paused his musings as he caught the sound of shuffling feet, glancing off to the side before smirking. It had been a while since he’d seen the detective, since he hadn’t wanted to plan anything until he’d dealt with his vision problem to some degree. And with all the problems he’d been having during the heist, he hadn’t been able to tell if the other had come or not.

image

“Long time no see, tantei-kun.~ Did you miss me?~”

He’d been there and he’d been paying special attention. The thief had been off the entire time and he hadn’t been anticipating him to turn the lights off to pull off the heist. Not that it was the first time, nor the last, but he would have thought the thief would have done something a bit more since it had been his first heist in a bit.

Then there was the way he had seemed more thrown off then usual by the flood lights.

“Miss you?” he echoed playfully, pose relaxed though his eyes were sharp and trained on the thief. He’d figure out what was wrong with him, if anything. “I suppose I did, if I showed up to your heist.”

image

“Hmm… I suppose that’s true. It does make me feel special, being the thief you’ll take time out of your oh-so busy nights to come see.” Kid threw a grin at Shinichi before raising the gem up to check it, casual and looking as though he was admiring it in front of the other like normal.

…Eeeexcept that it wasn’t. Oops… One aspect of his altered sight he hadn’t considered. Day was blinding white, night looked like day, and pitch black looked like a dimly lit room… Useful, but he wouldn’t be able to tell even if it did glow like this, unless it drastically changed the colour…

The thief’s air of confidence faltered, briefly, as he realised this, though it didn’t last for long. Shaken a little, that it affected even this important part, the reason he did this job, but not the end of his work entirely. …He could get Jii to check the targets later. Though, that did mean he wouldn’t be able to make calls on whether to leave the jewels behind at heists, or immediately return them until they could be checked… No ‘fine, you just want the gem back, and I don’t need it, so here’ situations from on out. …Umm…

“Unfortunately, if you wanted the gem, I’m afraid this is one I want to keep a while longer,” he continued, lowering his arm with the same amount of false laxness. “So I hope that ‘missing me’ really was for me and not the shinies I liked to leave behind for you.”

Send a symbol and my muse will show up in your’s house at 3AM…
✯ – with a sudden urge to cuddle

He knew the detective should have been back home by now, but he’d already checked all of the rooms…

Well, all but one.

The thief silently opened the door to the library, giving an small sigh upon seeing that, sure enough, the teen seemed to be scanning through the shelves.

Doesn’t he ever take a break?

Kid sneaked up behind Shinichi and slid his arms under the other’s, gently squeezing him as he placed his head on the detective’s shoulder.

“Isn’t it a bit late to be doing research, tantei-kun?”

There was a squeak this time as they ended up on the floor, Shinichi more in the thief’s lap then on the floor. And then there were lips on his neck, moving up the skin and then there was a brush against his cheek and he wondered if the thief could feel the difference in temperature as he knew his face had to be glowing with how red he was.

“Y-yes, I suppose I did, didn’t I. Though I had hoped, maybe, you wouldn’t be so difficult to predict in what you were up to.” He really should have known better. Clearly.

The thief hummed and pulled the other closer, resting his head on Shinichi’s shoulder. Seemed to be completely at ease with the other, for all that he was essentially tossing someone who should be his enemy around as he pleased. Looking at occupations.

Like that had ever stopped him before. And careful, detective, he may end up calling you cute again.

“When have I ever been easy to predict, tantei-kun? I’ll give that you’re always good at figuring out my plans, but I believe I’ve always been able to counter when you did…”

meitantei-cowlick:

Maybe it was about time they started, if… what ever that was that had happened was any indication. They really needed to be more careful if this game was going to continue. And he didn’t know about the thief but Shinichi knew he wanted it to.

“That sounds like a good idea.” It also didn’t sound like the thief was wanting to split up? Maybe? He almost hoped not.

He didn’t know if he could handle having to split up from him again in fear it might happen all over again. He didn’t have the mental facilities to go through that again.

“Should we split up?” he asked anyway, eyes on the thief’s hand that didn’t hold the smoke bomb.

Blinked. Ah… After that happened, the thought of splitting up hadn’t crossed his mind… Now he had to think, though.

Normally, it’d be smarter to split up and meet back (probably at Shinichi’s house) later, instead of them going together while one of them was purposefully noticeable. …And Spider’s never actually attacked more than once after he’s left… but Kid hadn’t seen him here to know he’s left yet. And normally the only reason he couldn’t try again was because the police came. The assassin could still be around… (Didn’t that give a chill… he came this way because there wouldn’t be police in the way, but suddenly felt much more vulnerable without a gang of officers around.)

“No,” Kid finally decided, “At least, not right now. We can later, if you want, but we should make sure both of us get away from here without any problems, at least.”

meitantei-cowlick:

Back? Had he been some where? Brows furrowed together and the last however long (and it must have been long because KID did not get nervous other wise) it had been seemed almost a blur.

“I know,” he murmured, reaching out to put a hand on the thief’s face as if to make sure it was actually him. He had never caught a glimpse of whoever had been talking to him but he had to make sure that the voice wasn’t using his thief against him.

Not that he hadn’t been trying to do so anyway.

“Sorry, I’m not sure what happened.” A frown and he tried to shove it all away, focus on the male before him. Kaito had a way of making it all better in the end.

“We should get going.” Didn’t want anyone coming up on them.

The released hand followed the detective’s, fingers loosely hanging off the other’s wrist, but made no move to pull away from the touch. Then the other hand let go as Kid took a breath, making himself relax.

…They normally didn’t bring up much of the more dangerous parts of their jobs with each other, aside from the general knowledge danger exists… But… If Spider started trying to use his illusions to drag Shinichi into this, he’d need to warn the detective about the man.

But not right now. The other was right, they shouldn’t stay around here, for more reasons than one…

“…Yeah.” Another pause, then he reached into a pocket for a smoke bomb, a faint (almost tired) smirk coming up as he pulled it out. “But we might should leave under some cover right now. Just in case trouble is still around.”

meitantei-cowlick:

thenightmarebyyourside:

Hmm… Yet how can you protect anyone if you can’t protect yourself?

The hand gripped harder, despite the attempt to remove it, another going to the opposite side and starting to shake the detective. The action had a desperation to it that didn’t match the voice, which gave a chuckle.

Doesn’t matter much at the moment, however, so I suppose you can have your little delusion a while longer…”

The lights started to fade, as did the black, revealing white grasping at the other, and a more familiar voice calling his name, so close it was a wonder he hadn’t heard it sooner.

He flinched at the voice, flinched at the truth hidden so plainly. Funny how the one thing he stood for kept being used against him. Some days it was enough to make him want to cry.

“My life doesn’t matter in the face of theirs,” he replied, trying to find the words to explain that it didn’t matter if he couldn’t protect himself. As long as he could protect them it didn’t matter.

Not that the voice was paying him much attention, continuing to speak as the hands holding his shoulders shook him… desperately? And what in the hell was the strange voice getting at, talking about allowing him his delusion a while longer? Who the hell did this guy think he was?

As the lights faded, black turning into white so bright it was almost blinding. And what was that oh so familiar voice calling his name?

Shaking his head, his other hand moved to grab onto the other white covered hand that held him. Blue came into focus finally and found his thief standing before him. Why did he look so concerned?

“Kai…?”

Shinichi not following him the whole way hadn’t been worrying in itself. Wrong turns or simply losing sight on him were things he tended to cause on purpose, but accidents weren’t rare either. It was when he decided to wait for the detective to catch up that he started to become concerned.

…Even one minute felt like far to long when the other had been actively following after him. Had he kept going the wrong way even after loosing sight of him? He’d gone this way because he knew the police weren’t in this area, so he wouldn’t have been pulled away, and Shinichi wasn’t the type to give up, so…

…Should he go back and check?

Another half minute of debate before Kid took one step, then another, making a slow pace back the way he’d come. No one on the main path, but looking off a side one… and there he was. But… the detective wasn’t moving. Standing there and staring blankly at the air… Which felt far too familiar for his liking.

“…Tantei-kun?”

…The lack of any response only made his concern rise more, and he didn’t wait too long before stepping closer, warily keeping an eye on Shinichi’s hands. (Empty, no weapons…) Another attempt at saying his nickname, then a pause. So many things kept up his sleeves, but if this was what he thought, he didn’t have anything that could safely shock him out of it…

Hypnosis got on his nerves the more he saw it…

“Shinichi, wake up.” Foregoing the nickname, reaching up to grab the other’s shoulder. No, shaking hadn’t really worked with Akako, he knew that, but electrocution or a hard smack to the head weren’t actions he wanted to jump to yet. Besides, even the simple touch earned an unexpected response when a hand grabbed his own and tried to dislodge it. And now the detective seemed… annoyed? Still took his chance and called out to him again, refusing to let go, even taking his other shoulder to move the other and praying the action from the teen meant he wasn’t entirely controlled yet, and only pausing when Shinichi shook his head and took hold of his other hand.

He almost hugged the detective out of relief when the focus had come back, the name (either of his really…) leaving the other’s mouth. But, no, not quite yet, he has some restraint… keeping it to a small (slightly nervous, don’t scare the thief like that) smile instead.

“…You back now? It’s… not really the best idea to space out at my heists. Trust me on that…”

shadowchildkaito:

Kaito took a few ‘steps’ forward. So far so good, but this wasn’t getting any less weird. “We’ll see how I do.” Normally walking on his hands wasn’t a problem.

Normally. “Ow.” He hadn’t lasted anywhere near as long as he had hoped he would. He had only lasted seven ‘steps’ before he fell over.

The small magician had been look back, watching the other warily, so when the almost inevitable fall came, it wasn’t much of a surprise. What did come as a surprise was the direction. His direction to be precise, and a small moment of panic shot through him when he knew he couldn’t move out of the way while he was carrying the tub of wat-

Splash!

…So much for trying to keep that with them…

It took him half a second to get his bearings after being knocked down, and a full second before a violent shiver went through his body at feeling – and knowing, but touch was more the concern – the other’s lower half on top of him. Not even going to pause to think, the boy’s already moving out from under the bigger Kaito, a little frantically. He’ll still stay nearby, probably pick the now-empty tub back up, it was more startling and extremely uncomfortable to feel than anything else. Give him a few minutes, and then he’ll make sure the other’s alright.

Such Concerned Royalty:

He’s mocking her. Taunting her. Playing on her stuttered hesitance with only the intentions of humouring her– Or really, making her feel inadequate. Stupid for making up such a horrendous, fantasy-esque lie. Princess Aoko and the Asshole Phantom Thief. A LARP that she knew she didn’t want to be a part of, because he only mocked her with every word spoken.

She tried to keep her cool, watching the door be flung open and yet not really budging. If she moved closer to block him at the door, he could make it around her to get the window. He was a magician– It was a shock he hadn’t just passed her already.

Oh wait– No it wasn’t. He was staying because he knows she hates him. What a joke.

❝ But dear bard– If the dragons have been hungry and chasing you for some time now… Wouldn’t they know your obvious escape through a window? Wouldn’t they be prepared? I’m sure there are a few dragons already out there, ready to capture you as soon as your wings take flight. It’s best if you just stay here! Before you get eaten! You can’t perform anymore if you’re swallowed up whole, right? ❞

The only option she had was to play along, seeing as she threw herself into this mess. She almost wanted the ground to swallow herself whole she was that embarrassed– But knowing she could help capture the bane of her existence by staying, that’s what kept her going.

A gloved finger waved back and forth in the air, a small, silent disagreement as Kid allowed his eyes to close. (Guard still up, switching his focus between listening down the hallway and back in the room.)

“Ah, but ojou-san, even the hungriest dragons couldn’t prepare for every possible route their prey could take. If they tried, there wouldn’t be enough of them to take their target down. And I can’t perform if I’m kept to one room, either, lovely and accommodating as the audience I have here is. Far better to fly through fire than stay in this castle.”

…No sounds yet. Either Nakamouri-keibu took a different route, or expected him to be somewhere else… So many different routes he could go with this situation. At best… well, Aoko wouldn’t have been here, but escaping from here had been the plan tonight instead of from the roof. It hadn’t been a joke to say there were too many routes to try to prepare for on the police (and Snake’s) end, it was up to him to choose which one to take. Even now, trying to plan a new route in his head, it seemed more and more like the safest ideas involved knocking Aoko out before escaping…

detectivebarou:

Knew from a logical standpoint that he wouldn’t do anything, however paranoia wasn’t logical. Tried to quell the ringing bells.

Somewhat alarmed at the shift in tone. Tensed for the briefest of moments at the motion, before heading closer. No perceivable threat. And didn’t really see there being one from him. If there was, wouldn’t be physical at least, probably. Of course there wouldn’t. It was KID

“Not the first time…?” Let maybe the smallest hint of worry edge into his voice. This wasn’t like the time his monocle was shot off or anything, was it? “What happened?”

Did anyone get hurt?

Did you get hurt? Do you need help? Unaware of his ever dropping guard as the genuine worry and curiosity spiked. Had a lot of questions on the tip of his tongue, instead of asking them, waited for him to explain on his own.

Just a bit more…

The serious expression held steady right up until the thief knew Conan had gotten close enough, and then it broke into a mischievous grin as he reached to swiftly (he did not want to give the other time to freak out from the action) pick up the smaller and hold him in his lap. Only holding somewhat tight for a brief moment in making sure the detective was steady before loosening his grip into a light hug.

(Honestly, spur of the moment as all of this is, he does keep risks in mind. If tantei-kun made enough noise, he’d need to be prepared to leave, if he reacted badly to being held in general, would let him go rather than risk anything. Heck, he’s already risking a lot even being here for no real reason other than impulsiveness.)

Shouldn’t let the chibi only focus on the fact he fell into an innocent trap, though, so Kid did answer the question, with more than a little tease in his voice. “People trying to catch me, some more enthusiastic than others, tricks, traps, heart pounding chase, daring escape… Like i said not anything that’s happened for the first time~”
