The teen blinked wearily as the door opened, eyes going wide as he saw the detective. He turned so that his back was to the Hakuba, hoping the other hadn’t seen the wetness on his face…. Though he most likely had…

“…I had nightmare,” he said, wincing at the hoarseness in his voice.

Hakuba didn’t know what he’d been expecting. Had he honestly expected the other to open up to him, with something that obviously caused great pain? Wasn’t it him who was always going after him, calling him Kid, trying to capture him? Who was he to ask for secrets, for personal things that Kuroba obviously held dear? No, he hadn’t had any right to ask for it, but he had left it open, let him know he was there, that he cared.

Which was dangerous.

image

Everything about the other was dangerous. The want to protect him, to get closer to him; to know more about him. He was a thief, Hakuba shouldn’t want to know how to make him feel better when he’s sad. But he did, he wanted to know everything and share his own secrets and get closer to the one person who caught his interest outside of murder. The one person he was starting to fall in lo-

Those were dangerous thoughts.

“Of course.” Hakuba headed over to his own bed, sitting on the edge of it. “Then you should sleep.” Hakuba glanced at the other, who was on his side, and sadness pulled at his chest as he ached to comfort him; but how? He couldn’t touch him, be near him that way, and it was obvious he couldn’t comfort him by listening to him. “Good night.”

Sleep. Yes, that would be nice… if he could return to it so quickly. While he normally could be out in a few minutes after closing his eyes, it always took longer after being woken up by a nightmare… But he’d have to start trying to fall asleep before it could actually happen, so the magician made a small sound of agreement and nodded, hesitating a moment before turning to the other side again and pulling the blankets up.

He really didn’t like letting others see him cry.

Well, okay, that may not be the entire truth. It would be fine if it was something simple. Sad scenes in movies, getting injured, or even with something like chopping onions. Those, he was fine with people seeing tears. There was an obvious, easy-to-see reason for them. But he didn’t like others seeing him get sad over something personal, because it led to questions that he really couldn’t answer without Kid being involved somehow. And he shouldn’t have even mentioned what the nightmare had been about, because of that reason as well… But he’d wanted to say. He’d wanted to tell Hakuba, have him know why his classmate wasn’t acting like normal.

Kid stopped him, though.

And he was grateful for the detective not prying.

Kaito shifted the pillow some, keeping it high enough that he could rest his head on it, but still hugging in his arms.

“…Good night.”

Napping at heists seemed to be becoming a reoccurring thing for Shinichi lately, or at least coming to heists not in the best of health. This time he’d actually napped while waiting for the thief and when he woke it was to the rustling of that well known cape. Hoping the master thief hadn’t realized he had been napping, he moved to try and stand, feeling off.

He wasn’t getting sick was he? He hoped not, KID wouldn’t be pleased at all.

“Took you long enough,” he teased, the long and fluffy tail behind him swishing playfully. He had no idea it was there. Nor that there were a matching pair of ears settled in his hair.

Shinichi looked as if he were in heaven, the touches and scratches to his neck and then back to his ears as well were just so… It all just felt so good it was almost threatening to overload his senses. It didn’t help that there didn’t seem to be a bad place in which to touch the detective turned feline.

However, at some point there seemed to be an odd twitch from the detective the longer the petting when on. And really it was the only warning KID got before he shifted some to bite at the wrist closest to his mouth. Oops, seemed he ended up a little overloaded sensory wise. Thankfully the bite wasn’t really all that hard.

Kid hadn’t really felt he was doing all that much, so the sudden bite did catch him by surprise. The twitch had largely gone unnoticed, but he wouldn’t have pulled back because of it even if he had. Even after the action, he waited a moment before removing his hands, giving the detective quite the unimpressed look. Shinichi had still been able to talk and be aware just a minute ago, so it wasn’t as though his mind was completely a cat’s.

The thief took a step away and crossed his arms. Though he did want to play with the other, he wasn’t interested in being bitten at random.

“No biting, tantei-kun. If you want me to stop or slow down, use your mouth for words, not teeth.”

They possibly weren’t, but he was certain KID was going to find out in the end. He seemed to very much be enjoying the change to the detective. Then again it seemed like he enjoyed any reason to invade his personal space, not that Shinichi worked too hard on stopping him.

“No, I suppose not,” he conceded. After all it was better then being a kid again, at least he was still his actual age.

There was a soft huff as the scritching to his ears stopped, eyes moving to the thief’s face before closing. The feel of those gloved fingers sliding through his hair and down his cheek, eventually resting under his chin, was really nice… He almost wanted to ask him to do it again when they started rubbing under his chin.

And that was probably where the detective was doomed, head tilting back to expose more of his chin and neck, and a heavy purring leaving him. That felt really nice.

A grin and his eyes seemed to light up. Yes, the thief was enjoying this, since it looked like Shinichi was behaving like a cat on top of having the ears and tail. That, more than anything, made him interested, even if the furry parts were adorable. Especially the purring.

He hummed and soon brought up his other hand to join the first in scratching, fingers lightly wrapping around the other’s neck on both sides as they went up and down along the neck and under the chin. And he continued that for a minute or so before one slid up from the side to work on the ears again.

His eyes were mainly focused on Shinichi’s face and the areas he was rubbing, but they did glance down some as he assessed where to pet and/or scratch to see how neko-tantei would react next.

This was going to be fun…

“…I had nightmare,” he said, wincing at the hoarseness in his voice.

Hakuba stayed quiet while the other laid there, not answering his question. He reached out a hand but paused before he touched, and then Kuroba was getting up. He quickly pulled his arm back to his side and he did catch sight of him wiping his eyes; he’d been crying. Hakuba frowned at that, thankful for the darkness, as it probably hid the frown. It must have been some nightmare, to cause the teen to cry.

Hakuba stayed silent as he spoke, he could tell Kuroba had more to say, though what he was going to say Hakuba didn’t know. This wasn’t a side of the teen he saw very often. He was normally all smiles, grins and laughter. It tugged on his chest a little to see him so… sad. He would never say it out loud of course, couldn’t bring himself to be that vulnerable, even if the other was trusting him.

The next words that Kuroba said caused him to go cold. He hadn’t really heard much about Kuroba’s parents, but last show made it rather clear what happened. He bit the inside of his cheek, fingers itching to reach forward and grasp Kuroba’s shirt to pull him into a hug, to comfort him. But he held back and instead looked down at his lap, unsure of what to say. He wasn’t very good at this sort of thing.

“I’m not really good with these things, at comforting others. But I’ve been told I’m a good listener.”

More pillow hugging and silence. A part of him knew the detective probably wasn’t used to seeing a less than cheerful Kaito, but it wasn’t as though he could suddenly fall back to acting like normal right now, after the other had already seen that he was down. And the half-offer to listen was appreciated, but…

He shook his head some.

“It’s fine. Not like I haven’t seen it before…”

He let out a slow sigh to try and push away the rest of the sadness that had come up and he fell back on his side, closing his eyes and curling around the pillow. Stupid thief caution. It was warning him that saying much else might be bad. That Hakuba always seemed to keep Kid in the back of his mind, and mentioning that his father had died during a show eight years ago might set off that part of him that knew Kid had disappeared around that time. He didn’t care of his own identity being found out by the detective at this point, considering the other pretty much knew it already, though the magician would continue denying it.

He didn’t want Hakuba considering Toichi was the first Kid. Didn’t want to give him a possible lead. Didn’t want him digging around.

Didn’t want him to find out ‘how come he did that’.

“I’ll be okay after I get some sleep. It doesn’t normally come more than once in a night.”

The thief didn’t look up. Though he had been the one to come over to the other’s house, he didn’t want the detective to see him like this…

As he recalled the events from earlier that night, the tears wouldn’t stop. He could still feel the hand of the man he had tried to save, just before his grip had…

A choke escaped him and he lowered his head even more.

“There was nothing I could do…”

Shinichi sighed a moment, watching him, then moved a little further onto the bed to curl up before him. He wasn’t sure if the other needed any sort of touch so he’d wait for now. He just… needed to find the right words now.

“Because we’re human,” he answered after a moment’s more of silence. “Because no matter how hard we can try at something sometimes we’re doomed to fail. You can’t dwell on the past, can’t let the failures and the deaths get to you."

God he was so bad at this.

"I know it’s not easy, and probably sounds pretentious or something coming from me. But you can’t undo what’s already been done, and you can’t bring back the lives that have already been lost. And I know it hurts, especially for someone like you who values life so much you have a rule that you try to never let get broken during heists.”

Someone had one told him those words, told him it wasn’t part of his job to pay for the ones he couldn’t help but that didn’t mean that every death he stumbled upon didn’t hurt. That every life he couldn’t save until the killer was caught didn’t haunt him.

The thief looked up at the other, staring for a minute before finally shifting closer. No, the words didn’t really help. He knew what was done was done. That he couldn’t change it.

That was the problem. It was permanent.

Though it was true that he focused too much on those that had been lost and his failures in general, he couldn’t just let them fade either. He needed to keep them, so he could try and avoid or learn how to better handle similar situations.

That didn’t stop the pain and guilt that arose every time another name was added to the list.

His ‘rule’ was laughable. Kid might not attack people, true. But that didn’t stop others from doing harm or trying to exploit that fact. Aoko and Jii threatened on separate occasions, Akako used as a puppet to try and kill him, people murdered while the killers hid behind the thief’s name. He likely had thousands of fans, many of which would be happy to go to prison in his place if it meant they could assist the ‘great’ Kaitou Kid. More zealous fans might even die for him. But why? Because he made himself noticeable. He’s a thief who puts on a show. He entertains them, amases them, makes them interested. He’s a gentleman who announces the crime he will commit, doesn’t hurt anyone himself, and almost always returns what he steals. Who uses magic and charm to distract everyone from seeing what he’s really doing.

They never see the danger. And those that do, he keeps away. Really, he shouldn’t have even come here right now. Shouldn’t keep coming back to Shinichi…

But he didn’t want to be alone either. Not tonight. No matter how much his mask of composure had slipped, he wanted- needed someone to be with, even if only as Kid. Though, he’d have still been happier if it had been after he’d calmed down enough to stop crying before the detective had come in…

A sigh.

Every time…

Slowly, he reached his arms out around the other, pulling him close and holding him tight, a slight tremor passing through them. His face pressed against the detective’s chest, hat slipping back some.

Every time he was given time to really think about what surrounds him… he couldn’t stop spiraling down. Probably, no matter what Shinichi had said, he wouldn’t have pulled out of it. But at least he’d tried. And it wasn’t as though what he said wasn’t true. The thief was just too set in his thinking, in his guilt.

“Well…”  Hakuba said, laughing with wincing smile. “Considering that I find myself to be quite naked, I can’t imagine where I’d be handing handcuffs; I do believe that you’re safe, Kaitou-san.”

He cleared his throat with a tiny cough into his fist, and glanced to his closet. “Though, if… if you do wish to stay- and it would be welcomed, I assure you -I should really get dressed. I wouldn’t want to make things any more awkward than they already are. And, incidentally…” He turned back to him, biting his lower lip hopefully. “…if you could avoid mentioning this little incident, I would… appreciate it.”

"Wasn’t exactly handcuffs that I was worried about…”

It was a silly paranoia, really. He was more worried about the possibility of being unmasked more than being physically captured. Even if Hakuba knew the thief was his classmate, and wasn’t likely to do anything like that outside of a heist, …if he would even do it then…, Kid couldn’t help but be wary. He held the detective in high regard, but the caution that had built up wasn’t going to disappear anytime soon.

“…But thank you. I think I will stay.”

He smiled at the other a moment before before he shifted, moving his arms back to lean on as he closed his eyes.

“And it’s not like a thief has many people he can tell, so no worries about that, tantei-san.~”
