He does have to blink quite a few times at the request, odd as it sounded. But it just sounded like the other person was curious to him, so…

“Sure?”

“you’re a magician hm?” He asks with a small smile. “Interesting. I don’t hate the Kid, oh no! I find him amusing,” He says with a chuckle. “I especially love watching his heists. It’s like real magic~” He says with a dreamy sigh.

Of course what would they know of real magic? How to really harness that energy to create things? He tried to figure out Jay because of his abilities to produce the illusion magic. Because really magic was something he didn’t fully understand. He knows it exists, but its baffling for the scientist.

“I’ve always been fascinated by magic, really. ”

image

“Yeah, Kid does some pretty big scale tricks at times. Guess there are some perks to being a famous thief who can do practically whatever he wants.“

Kaito smiled as his hands slipped into his pockets. Amusing, huh? Well, part of the heists do have to entertain the crowd if he wants to keep his easier escapes mixing in with everyone. And it was nice that people did enjoy them either way. That might not be his intention when he carries out his job, but hearing that even Enzio liked seeing them rarely failed to brighten his day. Fans, he always appreciated. So long as they didn’t try to get too involved with the thief.

“I’m a bit surprised that a scientist like yourself is interested in magic, though. I’d think most wouldn’t pay much attention to tricks.” Scientists, detectives… really anyone who was more interested in picking the magic apart than just enjoying it.

”You’re holding up the line…” That wasn’t the real reason behind him approaching the teen, but he wasn’t about to admit that he’d felt some concern. Although, now that he had approached the teen, he was feeling an inkling of déjà vu — like he’d seen this guy before.

Shaking his head, he pointed towards the entrance of the aquarium and noticed the large gap between the teen and the last person stepping inside.

”Are you going in or not?” The cold sweats and nervous twitching were enough of an answer, “Or are you too scared?”

“Ah…”

Kaito blinked and turned to check that… yep, his turn to go in. …Greeaat… A recurring thought to just cancel this heist popped up in his head again, soon followed by the constant argument that if he did, they might try putting it somewhere like this again. And he couldn’t really have the police – or anyone, really – learning that swimming finned devils tended to ward of a certain white  thief…

Aw, jeez… Why did Jii have to be out of town for this one?! Sure he could do heists on his own, but…

Oops, he’d been staring off into space again. A quick glance back down at the chibi detective and he gave another small smile.

“Ah, no… I’m going in. Sorry about that.”

The magician only paused a few seconds more before taking a breath and stepping forward to pay for admission, looking more calm and friendly than he had just moments ago. He could do this, they were behind glass. He’s had to scuba dive in the ocean with the things before, albeit under more pressing circumstances than just casing out where and how the gem had been placed.

A quick exchange of thanks and he moves out of the way, starting to walk further inside. It’ll be fine, he’ll be okay, just… maybe focus more on the people than what they would be looking at? That might work, but if tantei-kun was going to be sticking around, that might be more suspicious than what he’s doing already just by going into a building he clearly isn’t comfortable being in. He didn’t have to be in here long. Judging from the map, they’d put the target fairly close, though from the layout, it almost looked to be a large hallway of some sort? Must be an easy place to defend if they put it there. Maybe he can get by without actually having to see too many of these things…

Are you awake?

Resting on top of the building that housed a detective and a half probably hadn’t been the smartest idea… But since when was he one to follow what others considered smart? The gem from that night’s heist was held loosely between his fingers, half resting in his lap, already examined under the moon and without a red glow. And as he stirred when she came up, the fingers clenched around the morganite slightly.

“…Th’nk s’meone ‘lse nee’s y’ m’re th’n I d’, hous’ki-s’n…”

Ran approached the slumbering thief slowly, careful steps so as not to wake him. However, as she got closer, she saw him stir a bit and she gasped, holding in her breath and edging ever closer like a stealthy ninja. She didn’t want to wake him too much, although every fiber of her being told her to go and call the police. He looked almost peaceful as though the stress of the day had worn him out.

Her eyes fell upon the jewel he’d clasped in his hand and she froze once more as she heard him speak. His words were jumbled, wrought with sleep and confusion. At least, she thought so. She wasn’t sure if he was speaking to her or the gem he held. Should she chance it? Another step forward, so close now. Ever so gently she reached out, her fingers grasping for the white top hat he wore upon his head. “Just who are you?” She whispered and hoped he wouldn’t awaken

Her approach was only met with silence, Kid having settled again with his fingers loosening on the night’s prize once more. No, not until she took hold of his hat did anything register. The feeling of movement on his head helped draw him up from his dozing, not to wake him entirely, but enough that a small sound left him as his eyes just barely blinked open, unfocused and still hazy with sleep.

He normally headed for home after heists, when they ran this late, but that he’d come here instead meant carrying his tiredness with him. A rest really had been all he had in mind, waiting for the others inside to fall asleep, but it had dragged him down instead, and the silent response from the other didn’t trigger any defensive alarms.

“Would you like permission to enter the kingdom of blanket-fort-land?~” (*facepalms* He saw it, he grinned, he went with it)

“Permission? Since when do we need permission to go anywhere?”

Kaito walked in and looked around appreciatively. “I like what you did to the place.” It felt so comfortable. He went to a corner and flopped gracefully to the floor, careful to not take any sheets down with him. “How long did it take?”

“Thank you~”

Kid closed the door behind the other, letting another sheet above the doorway down to cover it and keep the atmosphere the fort provided. A few steps later and he joined his double on the floor, glancing up at his work.

“Hmm… About an hour? Maybe a bit less. It was worth it to do the whole room though, in my opinion.” The thief grinned. “Though maybe that makes it yours as well?”

That… His other self should be able to know what happened, right? Might take a little while, but he had the jewel from his…

No, wait. Probably shouldn’t bring that with him right now. There don’t need to be two magician cats. He should work on getting the other to figure out he’s not a normal cat, first… Hmm…

That might work… Okay, now to get Kaito’s attention first. Shouldn’t be too hard, considering how he looked right now…

He quickly darted in front of his counterpart, hopping on one of his shoes when he finished taking a step. At the very least, should get him to stop moving…

Kaito wasn’t an expert on cats, but that head shake looked too human-like a response to see on an animal outside of a movie aimed at kids. It could always just be a coincidence, but then the cat, well-

image

“You want me to follow you?” Was he being recorded or something?

Kaito gave a mental sigh and nodded, and if anything said ‘not a normal cat’ that might. Yes, yes he did want the other to follow. He meowed again and continued walking, heading for the park. There wasn’t much he could do as he was here and now, but he should be able to communicate better with more to work with there.

Most importantly in his mind, the sandbox. Because when he gets there, the first thing the newly turned cat thief will do is draw the Kid symbol as best he can with his paws after leveling and clearing off a spot.

Later, right. For all he knew, ‘later’ meant
   days from now.

Tearing his seething gaze from the thief,
Conan began to tug and pinch at various
pieces of clothing. He missed his jacket
and jeans, even if the material wrapped
around him now was strangely comfortable.
He had assumed from the start that the suit
was only for show, but he supposed now
that it made sense — one couldn’t
successfully snatch a jewel while wearing
   something constricting and annoying.

A twist at the hips, and he followed the flow of
the cape that fell from his tiny shoulders. It
was then that he noticed a lack of red sneakers,
upper lip twitching in a scowl. Of course, he
should have expected that much — ah, but his
watch and belt were still attached to him.
Good, at least he had something to work with
if his ‘twin’ became too amused.

It’s not like anyone else will see me like this,” he
spat, “so I’ll avoid the smiling part.”

“Killjoy…”

Despite the comment, the thief had continued to smile as the other checked over the outfit he’d been changed into, looking it over himself now that the chibi actually had it on. He hadn’t been entirely joking on the ‘younger’ part earlier. The size reference had come from his own clothes he’d worn as a child, using nicer ones he’d worn to his father’s shows, so he’d had a feeling it might fit just as well on the detective. Nice to know that assumption panned out.

“Even if no one will see you, it’s not like you’d lose anything by smiling either. In fact…” A flick of the wrist and a familiar pair of glasses appeared in his hand.

“How about this: You let me take one picture with you, where you’re smiling, and I’ll give these back now. And no, no one will see the picture, in case you might wonder.”

robokaito:

“Investigation reveals tampering with memory logs is present. I do not know who repaired me. They do not allow me to keep this information. I cannot conclude why. Because I cannot access who maintains me I cannot ask the Repairman why I cannot remember them.”

Robo sat down. He was trying to interact with humans on a less artificial level. Sitting down lessened tension, he had read.

Kaito remained standing, though his shoulder did relax when the robot sat down. It’s harder to suddenly act while sitting down, which made it even more clear the other didn’t plan on doing anything to him. For now, at least.

The information about not being allowed to remember who fixed the robot worried him more. For all he knew, they just didn’t want the other to randomly come to them, but it didn’t make sense…

“Why would someone fix you and not let you know who they were? They couldn’t have known what you did before, because if they could access you memory to see that, I should already have more trouble… What reason could they have to keep their identity hidden…“

…It made him uneasy. Somehow, even more than the fact that the robot that had tried to kill him before was back, the one who brought him back made him wary.

Because for the life of him, he couldn’t think of a positive or innocent explanation as to why they’d tamper with Robo’s memory like that…

“Spider, you…”

The thief’s going to be sending a glare at the assassin – which is just going to be ignored, he knows – before the look changes to concern as he watches his other self, wondering if he should offer some company. Pretty sure the double wouldn’t mind helping as well.

Just going to sit over here as one who tends to like adaptations of the Sherlock Holmes books, no matter how bad. Helps that he doesn’t care too much about how it compares to source material and just watches as its own entertainment.

“Kaito you mentioned your mom once before. What is she like?”

“Did I?”

The
magician tilted his head a bit. Hmm… well, it wouldn’t be surprising
if he had without thinking. Even if it might have been a passing comment
on her traveling at the moment and leaving him to the house, since that wasn’t exactly normal.

“Well…”
A small laugh. “I honestly think I got my energy from her, for sure.
She’s very bright, in most senses of the word. Though, as with most
moms, you still don’t want to see her angry. She can be… more than a
little scary.“

A sigh left him as Kaito rested a cheek on a hand.

“And
I know she’s traveling for a good reason, and she could be here anytime
if I said I needed her, but I don’t think it’d kill her to visit
without doing weird things to try and ‘help’ me. Jeez… her ideas of
how to get what she wants done… Something tells me she doesn’t think
them through sometimes. Like, more than once, she’s tried to deal with a
phobia by putting it in my face… And come to think of it, her sense
of humour isn’t the best for most people… She means well, I think,
but…” Sigh.

“She’s nice, though. And she does call a lot, so
it’s not like she completely leaves me alone. A bit eccentric, but she’s
still a mom.”
