Hakuba looked away from Kaito as he spoke, his anger slowly dwindling down until it was manageable. He knew what the other was saying was true. One day, he’d meet his match, something would go wrong, and he’d get hurt. It wasn’t like he was ignorant to his own faults, he knew them very well.

Hakuba let out a sigh and pulled away from him, running a hand through his hair before letting it fall to his side. He’d lost control, and he’d done to Kuroba what had been done to him in the past. It was not something he’d like to repeat, but if he stayed around and longer, he would snap again.

“It doesn’t matter.” Hakuba speaks. “If I go down saving a life, then my death will be worth something.” He’d prove he wasn’t useless. “Besides, it doesn’t concern you.” Hakuba turned to walk away.

He still doesn’t get it…

Kaito didn’t care if Hakuba got angry. He didn’t care if the other might actually do something this time. He didn’t even care if the other would hate him for it. But he had to point this out to the detective and try and get him to understand.

He grabbed the detective by the shoulder and turned him back, using his other hand to slap the other across the cheek.

“…Don’t ever say it doesn’t matter. No death ever ‘doesn’t matter’.”

Poker face wasn’t really an option right now, though he did use some of it to hide the tears that were wanting to form. Anger, sadness, frustration… Those could still be seen.

“Being killed because you refuse to take action to defend yourself does not mean you’ll be saving any lives. That may be true in certain circumstances, but it’s far more likely that you’ll just be tossed to the side and the killer still being allowed to do whatever they please, which helps no one.”

He paused and let go of Hakuba, but he didn’t back away.

“And don’t you dare say it doesn’t concern me. I know you. I’m one of the connections you made. Whether you think so or not, it does.”

You can’t be a detective, you’re to prissy, Hakuba. You’d be useless…

Hakuba grit his teeth, and his body moved without him telling it to. He quickly caught up with the other teen and grabbed his arm, pushing him up against a wall. He slammed his hand on the wall beside his head, eyes alight with anger. Hakuba had the patience of a saint, and he was usually in complete control of his emotions, but Kuroba had pushed him just a bit to far.

“I don’t need to fall back on barbaric plans to fight a criminal. I’ve gone up against murders and rapist, and never once have I had to lay a punch on them. Unlike someone like you who can’t do anything without a trick up his sleeve, I think things through and plan ahead, I look into variables, and because of that I don’t need to use violence. So don’t you dare look down on me; thief.” He snapped, his words like daggers.

Kaito’s eye’s widened as the detective forced him against the wall. It almost shocked him, that the other had gotten so angry. But it was nice to see the teen was actually human, for once. However, Hakuba’s words didn’t exactly do anything to help the irritation he’d had since earlier.

"It’s not about being barbaric, it’s about staying safe, idiot! There’s a reason almost all other police and detective’s carry a weapon of some kind. Just because you’ve been lucky so far doesn’t mean you always will be…”

The magician didn’t try pushing the other away, nor did he attempt to do the same as Hakuba had before and go to the side. If he had the detective’s attention, he wasn’t going to just escape quite yet.

“And if I was Kid, like you so hope I am, I would have tricks up my sleeve so that I can be prepared. People aren’t always as systematic as you have them to be, Hakuba! There’s no way of always knowing what they’ll do…”

His fists clenched at his sides and he looked away from the detective.

“You can’t always be prepared for everything…”

Hakuba wanted to curse, to kick, and to punch Kaito right now. This was not funny, he wasn’t enjoying this at all. Kuroba knew how he felt about these things, or at least, knew about his mysophobia, and yet here he was, leaning in closer; taunting him. It made Hakuba angry, it made him want to physically harm the other. But Hakuba wasn’t a fan of violence, and so he wouldn’t lash out at the other.

Instead he tried to duck under his arm, wanting to be free of the trap Kuroba had set for him.

“That’s enough Kuroba-san.”

Kaito let Hakuba go under his arm to escape, watching him for a minute before sighing again and letting his arms fall back to his sides, a look of disappointment flashing across his face.

“…You really can’t do anything outside of your head, can you? Plans, research, knowing what to say… Those won’t help if something unexpected happens, you know.”

He turned to continue down the hallway, not bothering to check if the other would come or not.

“One person tries to attack you, and you’d be useless….”

britishhsdetectivehakuba:

Hakuba could deal with victims, suspects, witnesses and criminals just fine. He could deal with the police and teachers, basically any adult, just fine. He social skills with other teens was a bit blotchy, but that was mostly because of his intelligence. He even flirted openly with many girls, he had no problem with that. It was just the people who flirted with him, or wanted to get in his pants that he had trouble with. It made him uncomfortable and nervous.

Hakuba opened his mouth to state this when he startled as Kuroba put his hands on the wall on either side of his head. It was almost a mimic of what had happened earlier, but the other guy had only used one hand; Kaito was using both. This also left him less room then before, putting them close together. The look on Kuroba’s face was also different, for a moment it was serious, something he didn’t see very often, and then he was grinning like himself again.

He swallowed a bit thickly and pressed himself as far back against the wall as he could. He did not like the feeling in the air, and didn’t know what Kuroba was doing.

“That’s different.” Hakuba responded, his voice a bit tight. “Now can you please back up, Kuroba-san.”

“I could… But you haven’t exactly convinced me you could get out of something like this. Not everyone is always going to be nice enough to go along with what you want, and there won’t always be someone to help you get out.”

He leaned in just a bit more, closing his eyes for a moment and smiling disarmingly at the detective.

“So, please, tell me what you would do if I were like the guy from before. If I hadn’t come, how would you have gotten away yourself?”

Hakuba was relived that the other had understood the situation and was playing along. He was a little surprised that he’d grabbed his sleeve and was pulling him, but he was following, just glad to be out of that situation. He could hear the tsk muttered by the other, but he felt no shame or guilt in escaping his flirtatious words and obvious want to get in his pants.

“Thank you Kuroba-san.” He spoke when they were out of ear shot. “For once at I was at a loss as to how to escape.”

He didn’t say anything for a moment, instead just shooting the other a small glance before coming to a stop and sighing.

image

“You know… you’re going to get in a lot of trouble if you can’t even get out of something like that. You’re a detective, after all…”

Kaito suddenly spun around put his hands to the wall behind Hakuba, trapping the other in between them. He held the other’s gaze with a far-too serious expression before suddenly giving another small grin.

“I’m not sure how you’ll deal with criminals like Spider, if you can’t even escape one guy who decided to start flirting with you.”

Hakuba was leaning up against a wall, almost trapped there by a guy. He was rather uncomfortable, and the blush on his face was bright red. He knew the intentions of the teen talking to him, just because he was a virgin, it didn’t mean he didn’t understand when someone was coming onto him. He was trying to think of a way to get out of this, and jumped when he saw Kuroba.

“A-Ah! Kuroba-san, just who I was looking for!” Hakuba tried to duck under the arm that was trapping him. “About that group project we were working on!” It wasn’t a complete lie, there was a group project, Hakuba just hadn’t chosen a partner for it yet. This was his best chance to get away from the other without seeming rude.

The magician’s eyes narrowed as he turned the corner and he saw the two. A part of him was a bit surprised any guy would even attempt anything with the detective, given his usual arrogant attitude and how obvious the other was that he wasn’t too interested in focusing on much outside of his detective work.

And then the rest of him was annoyed that they did try.

Kaito still blinked when Hakuba called out to him, responding to the other with a smile.

“Oh, good. I was just trying to find you to talk about that myself.” He walked over as he spoke, turning his gaze from the detective to the other boy as he lightly took hold of Hakuba’s sleeve and pulled him away, polite smile never leaving his face. “The teacher said she had more to tell us on what’s required, so she sent me to come get you.”
