The teen blinked wearily as the door opened, eyes going wide as he saw the detective. He turned so that his back was to the Hakuba, hoping the other hadn’t seen the wetness on his face…. Though he most likely had…

“…I had nightmare,” he said, wincing at the hoarseness in his voice.

Hakuba shifted when he felt the other move, wondering what he was doing; even with his eyes adjusted, it was hard to see him amidst the darkness. When he felt him finally settle he relaxed a little himself. The pondered some things over in his head before he started to hum. It was a soft, almost like a lullaby. It was something his mother used to sing to him when he went to sleep. He always found it relaxing when he was younger, and he hoped it would help Kuroba fall asleep.

Kaito hadn’t really moved much from where he had been. Maybe a bit closer to Hakuba, but it wasn’t by much, since he’d just been trying to get comfortable when he’d been settling. The covers had pulled down slightly when the other sat down, but the brunet hadn’t really cared, too busy being taken aback when the detective had complied with his request in the first place.

And he was surprised again when the other started humming, since he’d just been expecting the detective to sit in silence, or at most, start telling more stories again.

But it was a pleasant surprise.

The magician gave a soft, short hum and smiled. It really didn’t take nearly as long as he’d been thinking it might for him to fall asleep, breath evening out and muscles he hadn’t even been aware were still tense relaxing as he did.

“…I had nightmare,” he said, wincing at the hoarseness in his voice.

Hakuba sighed at the tease, because of course he would. He rolled his eyes and was about to roll over and end the conversation when his name was called. He tilted his head towards the other and waited for him to continue.  He was taken back by the request and opened his mouth to state just what he could do with it, but he stopped when he continued. He frowned and looked down at his hands as he thought it over.

He knew that nightmares always seemed to ease when there was someone else in the room, but they were already both in the room. Maybe it was about what the dream itself entailed, that caused him to want the comfort of another being in bed with him. He chewed on his bottom lip and looked from the bed to his hands before closing his eyes and getting to his feet.

It wasn’t like he had to lay down, he just had to sit there until Kuroba fell asleep. So he got onto the bed, feeling it dip under him. He pulled his legs up and placed his back against the headboard.

“Just until you fall asleep.”

He’d almost been certain the other would say no. And it wouldn’t have been surprising, really. So, even though he’d been the one to ask, he was a still a bit confused when Hakuba did move back over to his bed, though it didn’t last for too long. His eyes softened as he looked up and smiled at the detective gratefully, because, yes, the weight did make him feel better. Not enough to put him completely at ease, but felt much better than being alone, in a way, even if he knew the other would have just been in the next bed over.

image

“…Thanks.”

Kaito remained curled up around the pillow as he let his eyelids fall shut again and shifted a bit until he was more comfortable before settling.

Hakuba smiled and nodded, relaxing back against the bed, though he had no intentions of sleeping in it.

“He really is. he’s honestly the opposite of myself. He’s friendly to everyone he meets, where as I’m polite. He likes to find the good in everyone, he’s always smiling, laughing. He tries to make everyone feel as happy as he does.” Hakuba placed his hands over his chest, folding his arms. “I don’t know what I would have done without him. He’s my support.”

Hakuba raised a gloved hand to his mouth, yawning softly, and then looked up at the ceiling. “He gave me a reason to keep moving forward.” He closes his eyes. “I’m sorry, I kept you up later then I should have,” He sits up straighter. “I apologize.”

“No, really, it’s fine,"  the magician was quick to assure, a small smile tugging at his lips, "It was probably going to take me a while to get back to sleep anyway, and it’s nice to hear that you can talk about anything outside of your actual work.”

A slight tease at the end of that. The worry and curiosity loomed in the back of his mind, but they weren’t pressing, so he was trying to fall back into something more normal….

…For all of a few minutes, as the smile fell yet again and he looked over at the other teen.

“…Hakuba? Could you…”

A pause, as Kaito realised what exactly he was going to ask. He probably wouldn’t normally… but, just for tonight…

“Could you come and stay in the bed with me?” And another pause, followed soon by a slight blush and embarrassed hiding of the magician’s face in his pillow at how that might have sounded.

“I mean… not sleeping together or anything. You could even just sit like you were earlier…. …Just until I fall asleep?”

He would be happiest if the other would actually sleep in the bed, for many reasons, but that wasn’t why he’d really asked. He just wanted to feel the weight of the detective there. Knowing that Hakuba, at some point, had to be pulled up before he died… even if the other was fine now… it made that worry swell some. Having the detective stay with him right now probably wasn’t a necessity for dealing with it… but it would help to have the small reassurance.

“…I had nightmare,” he said, wincing at the hoarseness in his voice.

“Yes.” Hakuba answered, his face softening in fondness. “He’s out of high-school now, since he’s two years older then me. He’s getting his Private Investigator licence, currently. Though the last I heard of him, he was on a pretty big case, going undercover and everything.” Hakuba sighed, he really did miss Ryan, his support, the one who got him through the worst of his times.

image

“I guess you could consider him my senpai. He taught me much of what I know today, he was a huge part in me becoming a detective. If it wasn’t for him, I probably wouldn’t be here right now; or living.” He closes his eyes. “He brought me out of the darkness, and I owe him everything. He’s also how I got Watson.” Hakuba let out another sigh. “I miss him too, but the last time I brought him, he nearly died….”

That had been so terrible. He hadn’t known Watson would be scared of flying and the hawk had gone into shock. By the time they got him off the plane he’d nearly stopped breathing. Hakuba had rushed him to a vet, and they were able to calm him down thankfully. Birds could die rather easily when they go into shock; their hearts would just stop.

He’d made Bayaa drive them back to England then.

He listened as the detective spoke, a soft smile coming up at the obvious adoration Hakuba had for this person. It really was nice to know that he did have someone he actually got along with, considering he wasn’t actually all that social with people at school, outside of polite conversation. Well, and not quite so polite if the magician was concerned, though they didn’t bicker all the time… Not usually, anyway.

At the mention of not being alive if not for Ryan, though, a coldness went through him and he drew in a sharp breath, his mind shutting down for a moment. The words following the comment barely heard and faded soon after they reached his ears.

It had never occurred to him that the confident and slightly cocky detective might have ever had enough trouble that he’d let himself be taken by death.

And Kaito found himself scared by the thought, a knot tightening in his chest as he looked down.

Hakuba hadn’t exactly been the most welcome person he’d met. Criminal obsessed, arrogant, and, once he’d come to the conclusion Kaito was Kid, incessantly making accusations, both outright and veiled, and trying to catch the magician off guard. Honestly, every time he’d heard the other’s voice, his thief defenses would immediately go up. And it had been tiring and annoying.

But at some point, he’d started to not mind. Not bring up caution.

A good part of it likely had to do with seeing the other in school quite often. Hard to constantly be in constant ‘beware the detective’ mode when he was with him for so long. However…. another big part of the relaxing of caution had to do with the fact that…. Hakuba did seem to care. He may have said Kid was bait for Spider in the beginning, but he didn’t really want the thief to die. There had also been times like with Chat Noir, the injury to his arm, and being banned from magic at school, when Hakuba took the time to give a bit of help to the person he had already made clear that he was suspicious of being a criminal.

Irritating as the detective could be at times, both during the day and at night…. Kaito already couldn’t imagine what it would be like now without him here.

Wait, scratch that. Considering his first encounter with Spider… he’d be dead.

The magician fell silent again for a few minutes, but he didn’t turn around this time. He half wanted to talk more. Ask about Hakuba’s life, more about his past, why he thought he wouldn’t be alive.

But it wouldn’t be fair of him to ask about things that might be more personal, considering he wasn’t sharing anything himself. Nor did he want to, right now. He was more curious for information than he himself would be willing to give if the other was the one asking.

“…Sounds like a great guy…” he finally said, forcing himself to keep his voice normal. He didn’t really want Hakuba to think he was still depressed, though his current position and the silence from earlier likely hadn’t done much to get rid of any idea that he wasn’t.

At least while he had been babbling he’d given himself time to think of a real plan. Though he was torn between the outcomes; both bad for him. If it worked, he would be telling something about himself to the other, and he would have wanted to know more about him. If it didn’t work, he would be telling him something about himself and it would prove he didn’t and he had just made himself vulnerable in front of the enemy. Only KID was not really the enemy.

He never really was, his true prey was Spider, the other was just bait; but he didn’t think of him as bait anymore. He couldn’t, every time he tried to, he’d shudder, and flashes of KID winding up dead flashed through his mind. He wanted to protect him now, make sure Spider never got his next victim. He didn’t know when this changed, maybe after Nightmare; maybe even before that.

image

“I had my first case when I was in middle school.” Hakuba closed his eyes, head tilted towards the ceiling. “Ryan had gotten wind of a purse snatcher. Something not to dangerous for me, and like a couple of kids playing cops and robbers we spent the next week going up and down streets waiting, searching.” He chuckled a little and shook his head. “From dawn till dusk, before and after classes and the whole weekend we took to the streets.”

“We had become London’s protectors, but still we found nothing. There were only two of us after all, and London was a big place. I was about to quit, tell Ryan to waste his own time, when we heard it. Someone had screamed ‘purse snatcher!’.” He chuckled again, opening his eyes. “We both took off in separate directions, because we had no idea which way he had gone. That’s when I spotted him and took out my cellphone to call Ryan, following the other into an ally. I should have known it was a trap.”

image

“Unlike Ryan, I hadn’t spent all my time reading up on detective things. Sure I was a huge fan of Sherlock Holmes, but I was convinced I could never be a detective, because of my mysophobia. Ryan assured me otherwise.” He looked down at his hands. “If I hadn’t stopped in the mouth of the ally to catch my breath, I would have run chest first into a machete.” He clicked his tongue. “That was terrifying. Thankfully Ryan showed up and disarmed him, he’s pretty good at hand to hand, though he doesn’t look or act like it.”

“Ryan let me take all the credit, he actually shoved it all onto me, and after that we started to work together, just small cases, nothing big.”

Hakuba was talking again, though at least it was something more coherent.

Jeeze… Weren’t you the one saying I should sleep?

Kaito did listen though. Yes, a story made a much better distraction, even more so when it was about the detective himself. He remained where he was for a moment before shifting to face the other about halfway through the recounting, eyes open again. A hum left him when the tale was finished. He was having a hard time picturing the other not being a detective, and a brief thought was given to what Hakuba might have gone into instead. Though, with the rambling earlier, most likely something science related. And a sterile environment probably would have appealed to him quite a bit…

“… So much for it not being dangerous, then. Sounds like quite the adventure…”

Interest was letting him slowly push the traces of the nightmare away. More than the situtaion -not that it hadn’t been interesting in itself- was that Hakuba seemed to have a friend. The detective never really mentioned much outside of Spider and Kid, so hearing a bit more about him was a nice surprise.

“…Is Ryan a detective now, too?”

“…I had nightmare,” he said, wincing at the hoarseness in his voice.

Hakuba frowned as he watched Kuroba curl up, and to be honest he wasn’t good with this stuff. The distraction stuff, and he knew that Kuroba needed one. Since he didn’t know what was fully going on, he couldn’t just do that, so instead he had to come up with something that would get his mind off of things. Unfortunately, he wasn’t that great with coming up with distractions on the fly. If only he had time to think it over, come up with something that would surely make him feel better.

Instead he opened up his mouth and let the words flow, which probably wasn’t a good idea.

image

“According to VSEPR sulfur hexaflouride is one of the few compounds that causes a octahedral shape due to its irregular configuration.” Hakuba swallowed and looked down at his lap. “Linalool is the aromatic compound that gives lavender it’s smell, uracil is the nucleotide used in RNA that replaces thymine.” He could already feel the blush rising on his cheeks as he continued, wanting to smack himself.

“The leading strand of DNA is 5’ – 3’, while the lagging is 3’ – 5’, so an additional primer is necessary on the lagging strand.” He cleared his throat as he came to and end. “A DNA ligase is used in replication.”

…Well, that was unexpected.

He opened his eyes, blinked quite a few times, then twisted around to look at the detective, face showing his incredulity.

…The heck, tantei?!

If this was Hakuba’s distraction, it only half worked. Yes, it had gotten his attention, but it didn’t really hold it well, aside from leaving him slightly confused. Random chemistry facts weren’t exactly the best way to go in helping with something emotional, even if it did manage to throw his mind off for a second.

But from what he could see, the other was embarrassed to even be saying them, and he couldn’t really fault him for trying. A very strange attempt, but… interesting, nonetheless. The magician still turned to keep his back to the other, though a small smile did appear as he settled again. The facts didn’t take his mind off the looming memory, but at least he’d seen Hakuba get a bit embarrassed for them. Which was a bit cute…

If nothing else, he succeeded in dulling the pain somewhat… But if he was expecting a response in return, he was going to be waiting a while. Partially because Kaito had already said all he’d wanted to earlier, and part because he really had no idea how to respond to the science outburst.

“…I had nightmare,” he said, wincing at the hoarseness in his voice.

Hakuba didn’t know what he’d been expecting. Had he honestly expected the other to open up to him, with something that obviously caused great pain? Wasn’t it him who was always going after him, calling him Kid, trying to capture him? Who was he to ask for secrets, for personal things that Kuroba obviously held dear? No, he hadn’t had any right to ask for it, but he had left it open, let him know he was there, that he cared.

Which was dangerous.

image

Everything about the other was dangerous. The want to protect him, to get closer to him; to know more about him. He was a thief, Hakuba shouldn’t want to know how to make him feel better when he’s sad. But he did, he wanted to know everything and share his own secrets and get closer to the one person who caught his interest outside of murder. The one person he was starting to fall in lo-

Those were dangerous thoughts.

image

“Of course.” Hakuba headed over to his own bed, sitting on the edge of it. “Then you should sleep.” Hakuba glanced at the other, who was on his side, and sadness pulled at his chest as he ached to comfort him; but how? He couldn’t touch him, be near him that way, and it was obvious he couldn’t comfort him by listening to him. “Good night.”

Sleep. Yes, that would be nice… if he could return to it so quickly. While he normally could be out in a few minutes after closing his eyes, it always took longer after being woken up by a nightmare… But he’d have to start trying to fall asleep before it could actually happen, so the magician made a small sound of agreement and nodded, hesitating a moment before turning to the other side again and pulling the blankets up.

He really didn’t like letting others see him cry.

Well, okay, that may not be the entire truth. It would be fine if it was something simple. Sad scenes in movies, getting injured, or even with something like chopping onions. Those, he was fine with people seeing tears. There was an obvious, easy-to-see reason for them. But he didn’t like others seeing him get sad over something personal, because it led to questions that he really couldn’t answer without Kid being involved somehow. And he shouldn’t have even mentioned what the nightmare had been about, because of that reason as well… But he’d wanted to say. He’d wanted to tell Hakuba, have him know why his classmate wasn’t acting like normal.

Kid stopped him, though.

And he was grateful for the detective not prying.

Kaito shifted the pillow some, keeping it high enough that he could rest his head on it, but still hugging in his arms.

“…Good night.”

“…I had nightmare,” he said, wincing at the hoarseness in his voice.

Hakuba stayed quiet while the other laid there, not answering his question. He reached out a hand but paused before he touched, and then Kuroba was getting up. He quickly pulled his arm back to his side and he did catch sight of him wiping his eyes; he’d been crying. Hakuba frowned at that, thankful for the darkness, as it probably hid the frown. It must have been some nightmare, to cause the teen to cry.

Hakuba stayed silent as he spoke, he could tell Kuroba had more to say, though what he was going to say Hakuba didn’t know. This wasn’t a side of the teen he saw very often. He was normally all smiles, grins and laughter. It tugged on his chest a little to see him so… sad. He would never say it out loud of course, couldn’t bring himself to be that vulnerable, even if the other was trusting him.

image

The next words that Kuroba said caused him to go cold. He hadn’t really heard much about Kuroba’s parents, but last show made it rather clear what happened. He bit the inside of his cheek, fingers itching to reach forward and grasp Kuroba’s shirt to pull him into a hug, to comfort him. But he held back and instead looked down at his lap, unsure of what to say. He wasn’t very good at this sort of thing.

“I’m not really good with these things, at comforting others. But I’ve been told I’m a good listener.”

More pillow hugging and silence. A part of him knew the detective probably wasn’t used to seeing a less than cheerful Kaito, but it wasn’t as though he could suddenly fall back to acting like normal right now, after the other had already seen that he was down. And the half-offer to listen was appreciated, but…

He shook his head some.

“It’s fine. Not like I haven’t seen it before…”

He let out a slow sigh to try and push away the rest of the sadness that had come up and he fell back on his side, closing his eyes and curling around the pillow. Stupid thief caution. It was warning him that saying much else might be bad. That Hakuba always seemed to keep Kid in the back of his mind, and mentioning that his father had died during a show eight years ago might set off that part of him that knew Kid had disappeared around that time. He didn’t care of his own identity being found out by the detective at this point, considering the other pretty much knew it already, though the magician would continue denying it.

He didn’t want Hakuba considering Toichi was the first Kid. Didn’t want to give him a possible lead. Didn’t want him digging around.

Didn’t want him to find out ‘how come he did that’.

“I’ll be okay after I get some sleep. It doesn’t normally come more than once in a night.”

Hakuba’s gloved knuckles wrapped against the door. It made a hallow knocking sound, at least to his own ears. It hadn’t been that loud either, he was hesitant, standing there with his fist hovering inches from the door for what felt like hours, but had probably only been minuets. His mother had come to town to visit, and he’d been happy about that, he missed his mother.

What he didn’t miss was the fighting.

He let his hand fall to his side, his other rising to ball into a fist in his suit sleeve. When his mother came to Japan, which wasn’t very often, or his father came to London – which was even less – his parents tried not to fight in front of him. They know how it made him feel. He knew they were never going to get back together, and he never acted otherwise, he never tried to make them love each other again.

That didn’t make it hurt any less.

The yelling had gotten loud, so loud he could hear it in his bedroom, his safe place; the place where nothing was supposed to touch him. He’d tried going for a walk in the garden, but the sound of doors slamming and shouts had drawn him away from the house, and towards the house of his classmate.

Normally when he got anxious like this, his mysophobia would get worse and he’d spend a few hours washing his hands, and then a few more in the shower. But for some reason today was the opposite. Instead of wanting to hide from the world, from everything; he wanted to be touched. He wanted to be held, for someone to hold his shaking body as he cried. He wanted to be weak, just for a few moments.

He was pulled from his thoughts as the door before him opened. He took a step back, a little bit surprised, and he could already feel his shoulder starting to shake, the tears welling up in his eyes. He let his head fall forward, the deerstalker casting a shadow over his face as he waited for the other to speak.

“I really shouldn’t stay too much longer, my mother will be looking for me.” Yes, his mother was here for a visit, rare indeed, he should head back home, spend time with her; he knew she missed him. He hardly spent thing long of time away from her, she would usually come with him to Paris, though not every time of course; she was a busy women. He rubbed at his face a little, and his mouth opened wide in a yawn.

image

His eyelids felt heavy and another yawn escaped his lips and sleepy tears welled up in the corner of his eyes. When was the last time he slept anyways? He’d been preparing for his mom to visit, trying to make it so her and his father would have little to no contact; but he’d lost. He’d also been making sure he wouldn’t have much to do so he could spend as much time with her as he could.

It had probably been at least two days.

“I should head out.” He tried to push himself up, but his arms shook and he found he was heavier then normal, sleep making his whole body weight more then it should.

He may have been willing to let the detective leave. Hakuba seemed to have calm down some, and it wasn’t as though Kaito could tell the other to stay just because he liked hugging him…

But he changed his mind when he could hear the yawns and noticed the weak push and shaky arm.

“…You should at least stay the rest of the night. If your mom is even up at this time, I’m doubt she’d want her son walking back when he’s this tired, rather than just getting a little sleep.”

The magician continued holding the other, though lighter now. If Hakuba was going to insist, he wouldn’t stop him from leaving. He was worried, but not really wanting to force the detective into staying…

“And it’d be silly to come all the way here just to ask for a hug and then leave. I can set an alarm for when you think you’ll really be starting to be missed.”

Hakuba could tell that he’d caught the other teen off guard. He played with the sleeves of his dress shirt and stared down at his hands. He could tell his mysophobia had been getting worse. The amount of sores and blisters on his hands had risen from all the washing he’d done. He clenched his hands closed, suddenly ashamed of them, of himself. As much as he boated about the control he had in his life, he really had none what-so-ever.

Hakuba closed his eyes and let out a breath before startling as he felt the other shift and wrap his arms around him. He opened his eyes and looked up at the other over the tip of his hat before reaching up to take it off and letting it fall onto the couch beside him. He shifted so he was more sideways then facing the front and laid his head on Kuroba’s shoulder, eyes fluttering closed once again.

He’d forgotten how nice it was to be held. The feeling of arms wrapped around him, like a warm blanket. It wasn’t that he didn’t like being touched or held, but there were just so many things that could transferred by contact. Like how it only took sharing a hat to transfer lice to one another. Or how a rash could be exchanged with a touch, if it was a contagious rash.

There were so many things out there, it made him shiver. He shifted a bit closer, so not even air was between the places their bodies touched.

He was suddenly really tired. The crying and the emotions he’d let – no, not let, was forced to – roam free, making his body heavy, his eyes burning with the need to sleep. He could also feel a headache starting to form in the back of his head, n ear the base of the skull. He’d forgotten how tiring feeling could be too. He wanted to curl up, lay his head in Kuroba’s lap and sleep. He knew he was already pushing things so he let that thought wither away.

“Thank you.” It was a sleepy murmur. “I’m sorry for disturbing you so late.” He was trying to force himself awake, he didn’t want to fall asleep like this. If he woke up, and the need to be held was gone, and Kuroba was still holding him, he’d flip. Kuroba had been kind enough to do this for him, he didn’t want to flip out on him; he had to stay awake.

Kaito loosened his arms some so the detective could move, tightening his hold again after the other seemed to have gotten more comfortable. He smiled when Hakuba got closer and tilted his head to rest on top of the other’s, his own eyelids slowly fell closed.

This… was nice, though his curiosity over what had put the other in this state was burning in the back of his mind.

“It’s no problem. I was just messing around on my laptop, so I don’t mind.”

Truthfully, he’d been about to head off to bed after checking a couple of more things, but he wasn’t about to turn away someone who’d come to his house when they obviously needed the company. More so when it was someone like Hakuba, who definitely wouldn’t show up at this time unless it was important. And if it was comfort that was needed… well, that the magician could easily provide. It was certainly something he wouldn’t mind losing some sleep for.

“And you can stay as long as you need to.”
