Whether it’s true or not, the magician just raises an eyebrow and doesn’t even make a move to check.

Hakuba watched him and then shook his head, letting out an amused sigh. He let his arms fall to his lap as Kaito push the paper towards him. He reached for the origami dove, picking it up before placing it down in his lap. He turned his attention back towards the grinning teen in front of him and chuckled.

“I’m starting to wonder if you’re not addicted to magic tricks.” He looked down at the dove in his lap. “A dove, very interesting choice.”

He lifted it back up and examined it closer up. It was well done, and Hakuba was a little bit impressed, not that he’d ever say that of course. No, Kuroba already had a big enough ego as it was, he didn’t need Hakuba feeding it. He tucked the dove into his breast pocket and took out a small, square sheet of paper.

He made a valley fold, diagonally, before unfolding it. He then folded the right and left corners until it formed a sort of kite shape. He then folded the right and left corners again, until it formed a diamond shape. He then stuck his finger into the pocket created and folded it down into a squash fold, and repeated that with the other side before folding the whole thing in half, creating half a diamond vertically.

He was a bit surprised when the detective pulled out the paper. Even more so when he started to fold it. The teen hadn’t really expected him to be interested in origami. Though, with as precise as Hakuba was with everything else, it wasn’t as surprising that he was good at it.

He lifted his head from the desk to watch the other work, trying to guess at what it was the detective was making

“Kuroba-san, you’re zippers undone.”

“You know, for someone who spends his time teasing others, you sure can’t take it when it’s sent back your way.” Hakuba turned his chair around so he was facing Kaito. “You also shouldn’t slack off, just because you can’t do magic tricks.” Hakuba watched him before sighing.

“Fine, I apologize, better?” Hakuba looked away from the other teens, arms crossed over his chest.

Kaito cracked one eye open to regard the detective. At least when he teased, it wasn’t when people were already having a bad day… Well, unless it was to try and cheer them up…

He blinked and glanced at the back of the room out of the corner of his eye before carefully cupping one of his hands and placing it palm-down on the desk. When he moved it, a small origami dove had appeared. He didn’t do it too often, but he could be subtle with his magic.

It just wasn’t as fun.

The magician pushed the paper towards Hakuba and grinned.

“Kuroba-san, you’re zippers undone.”

“I have to say, I’m rather fond of this quiet Kuroba. Finally there is peace in the classroom, maybe everyone will be able to pay attention now that our class clown has been knocked off his podium.” This actually wasn’t completely true, he’d actually grown fond of the teens antics, even if some days he wished Kaito would drown himself.

…Well, ok, not the best sort of distraction. The glare continued for a moment, until Kaito finally closed his eyes and shrugged. If that was how the detective was going to be, he didn’t have to listen.

He placed his arms on the desk, slightly harder than necessary, and put his head down. They said he couldn’t do magic, but they never said he had to pay attention to the class.

*heavily debates* … ✯

Hakuba’s gloved knuckles wrapped against the door. It made a hallow knocking sound, at least to his own ears. It hadn’t been that loud either, he was hesitant, standing there with his fist hovering inches from the door for what felt like hours, but had probably only been minuets. His mother had come to town to visit, and he’d been happy about that, he missed his mother.

What he didn’t miss was the fighting.

He let his hand fall to his side, his other rising to ball into a fist in his suit sleeve. When his mother came to Japan, which wasn’t very often, or his father came to London – which was even less – his parents tried not to fight in front of him. They know how it made him feel. He knew they were never going to get back together, and he never acted otherwise, he never tried to make them love each other again.

That didn’t make it hurt any less.

The yelling had gotten loud, so loud he could hear it in his bedroom, his safe place; the place where nothing was supposed to touch him. He’d tried going for a walk in the garden, but the sound of doors slamming and shouts had drawn him away from the house, and towards the house of his classmate.

Normally when he got anxious like this, his mysophobia would get worse and he’d spend a few hours washing his hands, and then a few more in the shower. But for some reason today was the opposite. Instead of wanting to hide from the world, from everything; he wanted to be touched. He wanted to be held, for someone to hold his shaking body as he cried. He wanted to be weak, just for a few moments.

He was pulled from his thoughts as the door before him opened. He took a step back, a little bit surprised, and he could already feel his shoulder starting to shake, the tears welling up in his eyes. He let his head fall forward, the deerstalker casting a shadow over his face as he waited for the other to speak.

Kaito blinked when he heard a faint knocking sound, hands stilled over his laptop. He waited for a few seconds, but the sound didn’t return.

Did I just imagine that?

Another moment of hesitation and the magician pushed his chair back to stand and make his way over to the door. He wasn’t really expecting anyone…. Certainly not at this hour. But he undid the latch to check anyway, eyes widening when he saw Hakuba standing outside. And though the detective tried to hide under his cap, Kaito hadn’t missed the look in his eyes. Something was definitely wrong. Especially for the teen to have come at this time of night.

The magician realised he’d been standing in silence, mouth slightly open. He quickly closed it and reached up to scratch his cheek, looking off to the side. He hesitated again before stepping off to the side, holding the door open for the other.

“I won’t ask for now, but you might as well come in.” A small teasing smile appeared. “Just hope you didn’t come all this way hoping to see me wearing a white suit, because I’m afraid you’ll be a bit disappointed.”

Kaito guessed the other likely wasn’t here because of anything Kid related, though. It just felt safer to start off in familiar territory, with such an unusual situation.

“Kuroba-san, you’re zippers undone.”

Hakuba shook his head, letting out a soft chuckle. He was wondering when the principal, or even teachers, would get tired of the stunts he pulled. He crossed his arms and leaned against one of the desks. He honestly found this rather amusing, but he had also been handed a challenge and Hakuba was not known to back down from one.

He was a detective after all.

“So, are you protesting with your silence, or just refusing to talk because you’re feeling sorry for yourself?"

An eyebrow twitched at the detective’s words.

He sat up and crossed his arms, glaring at the detective and sticking his tongue out childishly. Of course he was protesting. Mostly. The magician may also have been starting to get a bit down because he was getting a bit restless sitting in his seat for so long, but at least Hakuba was giving him some distraction…

“And what’s got you in such a detestable mood.” Hakuba raised an eyebrow, but it was true, his zipper was undone.

Kaito waited a moment more before closing his eyes and letting out a slow breath. He looked down to fix the zipper, before reaching in to his bag to pull out a note he’d been made to sign by the teacher, holding it up for the detective to read.

‘I, Kuroba Kaito, am not allowed to do any magic on school grounds for the day.’

It was signed for today. He pointed at the back of the room, where a couple of school guards were standing, seeming to be keeping an eye on him.
