The thief quickly lifted his head when he heard the voice.

Rather unnerving song to be singing at this time of night…

He looked around, not seeing where the song was coming from right away.

“Umm… Is someone there?”

”..Right.”

Who knows, maybe if that stranger was young enough, it could work. Or at least make him dizzy to enough to flee with the kids. that was a wild bet,  but it’s not like he had a lot of other options anyway.

“Well then, look at the pendulum, would you. And open your ears wide.”

That said, he started to move the pendulum back and forth, slowly, oh so slowly…

And then he started to sing with an eery, inhuman voice.

“Oh, little children, please don’t squirm. Those ropes, I know, will hold you firm.”

Kid tried hard not to actually focus on the pendulum. To look off to the side or just above it. But for some reason, when it began moving, he couldn’t look away. His body relaxed, his eyes went back and forth with the small coin. And when the song started, they glazed over as his mind began to get clouded…

However, part of his mind was still aware that this was strange. Even as the fogginess spread, there was a distinct feeling of familiarity with what was happening…. Like something similar had been done to him before…

Three red lights flashed in his mind.

Hypnosis!

A surge of fear shot through him, bringing him back to awareness.

The thief used his poker face managed to maintain the unfocused stare, though. If he was going to try and get the kids away from this man, whom he was now positive had taken them, this would be his best and likely only opportunity….

Kid closed his eyes and giggled, smiling at the other, acting as best he could like he’d seen the children doing. Though he had ‘disguised’ a kid at least once before, this still felt very, very strange.
