13: “I can’t breath.”

Today was just not her day. Sera had somehow not noticed that she had gotten stung until early allergy symptoms started setting in, and when she rummaged through her pockets she realized that she had forgotten her auto-injector at the hotel. To make it worse, the hotel was in Beika and she was in Ekoda, and she had no idea of where the nearest hospital was. Trying to keep calm despite the fact that it was already starting to get harder to breathe, she stopped the nearest person she could find.

“Do you know…where the hospital is? I…I can’t breathe…”

“Kaito…huh?” Sera automatically scratched at the sting on her wrist, barely avoiding the stinger that was still there.

“I hope…they…get here…” She thought she could hear approaching sirens, but it could have been her own desperation talking. “You…hear…that?”

Oh good, it wasn’t his imagination. He almost wanted to sigh in relief, but that could wait.

“Yeah,  I hear it. They should be here any minute now. You’ll be okay.”

Kaito kept his eyes on the street until his smile grew when he saw the red lights, and he moved to stand up and wave them over.

Forcing a smile, Sera let out a weak laugh at his comment. “Heh…You know…I don’t…know your name….” Hopefully she’d be getting help soon, her wheezing for air was getting worse. The scared teen shot a glance at the street, trying to see if the ambulance had arrived yet.

His smile fell into a gentler one when he noticed how she was sounding, though showed no nervousness of his own. He didn’t want her getting scared any more than she already was if she thought he was worried about her condition as well.

“Kuroba Kaito,” a hand came up to scratch his cheek as he gave a small laugh, “I’d say it’s a pleasure to meet you… but… Probably isn’t on your end…”

The magician followed her gaze down the street, still not seeing anything, but could he hear sirens? Hope his imagination wasn’t messing around with him…

“They’ll get here in time. Don’t worry, some bee isn’t going to be taking you out today if I have anything to say about it.”

She wasn’t going to question his reason too hard at the moment, thankfully for him. Instead, she blinked as he covered her with his jacket.

“Thanks…And yeah…it happens a lot…” Honestly, if someone got it right first try, then it was because they knew her somehow or she was in her school uniform at the time.

“Well, guess I’ll be an exception,” he commented, grinning as he sat back to wait.

Yeah, exception being that he got jump kicked in the face for getting it wrong… Doubt many others got that treatment. Warranted, yes, but jeez…

Hmm… been a couple of minutes since he called… Should take maybe five more? A bit longer? Either way, he’ll keep an eye on her to make sure she’s okay when they come to get her.

Sera nodded and laid down, breath coming in wheezing gasps. Hopefully the ambulance would get there fast…wait a second…

“How…did you know…I’m a girl?…” Had she met this guy before? She would have thought more on the issue but most of her focus was on trying to breathe.

Once he’d given the information needed over the phone, Kaito moved to sit a short distance from the other. At the question though, he paused and blinked. Aahh…

“Lucky guess? I mean, you’re clothes might look boy-ish, but you sounded more like a girl to me, so I went with that.”

BSing at it’s finest, clearly. But hey, best reason he can think of right now. After another pause, the magician started to take off his jacket to put over her like a blanket. Relatively close as the place was, it shouldn’t take too long for help to get here, but he’ll help with what he could in the meantime.

“Do people really mistake you for a boy so often that you have to question when they get it right?”

“Got stung by a bee…allergic…” She wasn’t sure if she could get to the hospital fast enough, but she had to try. Admittedly, she could just call an ambulance, but anxiety over her state was keeping Sera from thinking entirely straight.

“Need hospital…”

Allergy…? Well, the other might not be thinking straight, but the magician immediately pulled out his cell phone to dial 119 and went to put a hand on her shoulder.

“Alright, I’m calling them. I don’t think you’d be able to make it there like this, so just lay down and try to keep calm until they get here, okay?”

His own voice was calm, if still carried the concern, and when the call was answered, Kaito pulled back a bit to inform that a girl was having an allergic reaction and gave their location.

Kaito’s initial worry over recognising the other who’d stopped him largely disappeared when he heard the question, nervousness quickly turning to concern as he looked her over. He didn’t know what the problem was but…

“Ah.. yeah. The hospital’s almost fifteen minutes away, though. Is it something that needs that? Because there’s a clinic that’s just a few streets down, if that would work.”

detectiveofmysteries:

There were still 15 minutes until the bus showed up, so maybe it was a good idea to continue talking to Kuro for now.

“Is it okay if I follow you to the park? I wouldn’t mind meeting your friends!” Okay, maybe she was curious about Kuro as well. The boy had seemed lost at first, but suddenly had to meet with friends? This was a bit odd.

image

No, it wasn’t okay… But Kaito already suspected she’d join him, since she’d seemed interested in what he was up to. Oh, well, he’s got a plan. Not sure how well it might work, but… guess he’ll see.

image

“Ah… Well, I don’t mind… But are you sure, oneesan? Wouldn’t it be bad if you missed your bus?”

detectiveofmysteries:

“Sera Masumi. You know, you’re pretty smart if you got my gender right!” It wasn’t every day that Sera met someone who could get it right first try. Besides, Kuro seemed to have paused a bit before giving his name. He could have just been nervous but…

image

“What are you doing out here alone?”

Well, of course he’s not going to call her a boy again, considering that’s what had gotten him in trouble last time… Okay, so it might not have been the smartest to say right now, but he can pass it off as just getting a lucky guess or being smart. So he smiles happily at the compliment and his head tilts slightly at the question.

image

“I was just on my way to the park to meet up with some of my friends. We were planning on hanging out today, and I’m already a bit late…” If there was one thing the thief’s gotten used to coming up with quickly, it would be an excuse, further plans for what he could say being drawn up as he spoke.

detectiveofmysteries:

“Thanks!” She had to admit, the child seemed a bit familiar, but she couldn’t place where she could have seen him before. Then again, he looked somewhat like Conan. Maybe that was it?

“Hey, what’s your name?”

image

“You’re welcome, oneesan,” he said, smiling before it faltered a little.

…Right… name… umm…

Obviously he can’t just use his own. That’d be confusing when he returned to normal. …But he hadn’t considered a name yet. Hmm…

A slight pause passed before he grinned again and slipped his arms casually behind his head.

“Hatosei Kuro. Yours?”

detectiveofmysteries:

“Maybe if I turn here…no?” Sera had managed to get lost in an unfamiliar part of Tokyo. As nice as the area was, she had other things to do and needed to find a bus stop. She could ask for directions, but the only other person around seemed to be a young boy.

Worth a shot’  Sera shrugged as she approached the child.

“Hey, do you know where the bus stop is?”

Kaito looked around, arms crossed over his chest as he tried to figure out what he could do right now. He’d called Aoko to let her know he’d be working on something with Jii for a while, so he didn’t want to draw attention by going home where she might notice he wasn’t actually out…

A vaguely familiar voice drew him from his musings about just staying at the park for a couple of hours or so to look up at the person coming near. Then he blinked once, twice, and his eyes widened slightly.

…Think he’s feeling a phantom pain from the time at that heist, now…

…But wait, he’s a kid. Not the Kid. It was doubtful anything would happen now, so the magician simply smiled disarmingly, even as he took a step back to face her.

“Yeah, it’s just a couple of streets down and to the right. There’s a tree next to it, so it’s sometimes hard to see if you don’t know where it is.”
