(Hmm… Was looking through MK chapters, and I did notice this in the anime, but always fail to mention it. So while I’m in a rambly mood, might as well do it now.

I love how the anime sorta dances over why Kaito choose to stay as Kid. Yes, yes, they have him say he wants to know who killed his dad. May just be the translation, but I mean…

image

Honestly, yes, the quality of this leaves a lot to be desired in general, but… I could see Kaito being genuinely angry enough to think this.

image

And does this look like the face of mercy to you? I mean… *cough* That could just be a determined face… but it honestly feels a bit darker than that to me.

Either way, I do think he’s out for revenge. Was, is, just went from ‘make them pay’ to ‘destroy the thing they’re looking for’ specifically.

Which makes me think about the nature of the two Kids.

On the one hand, we have Toichi. A skilled magician who became a thief to take the spotlight from Phantom Lady and give her a chance to retire (and marry him). It’s never said exactly how he came to be involved in the whole Pandora business, but Snake said they’d warned him away once. So I imagine it to be similar to how Kaito came across them. Whether Toichi knew what he was getting into when he stole a jewel that caught their attention or not… *shrugs*

And honestly, the fact that the organisation is warning Kid (Kaito) again, completely thinking he’s still Toichi, makes me think they really didn’t encounter Toichi all that often, or at the very least, not to where they actually believed him to be a threat. Possibly learning his identity somehow the first time they saw him, even, to feel confident enough that just a warning would be necessary to get him to stop. If Toichi had caused them a lot of trouble, I doubt they’d be so nice as to caution him.

Anyway, we don’t know too much about Toichi as Kid, aside from his first appearance as a thief in France and the story from Shinichi’s childhood. But they do act differently. Toichi was older when he started, and knew some of what he was getting into, and was just as quick at thinking on his feet as his son. The biggest difference between the two really is just experience and, yes, Poker Face. What little we see of him as Kid, his confident smile never budges an inch. Aside from maybe one panel where he looked serious.

And then there’s Kaito, who, much as he tries otherwise, doesn’t have as steady of confidence. He got thrown into it by his curiosity, because of finding the secret room his father had kept locked for eight years. Then stayed because he wanted revenge, on an enemy he didn’t even know. Everything about how the second Kid started his job was filled with questions and uncertainty. And it probably made his faith in his father waver a bit as well.

image

Kaito obviously loved and respected his father. So, to consider that the man he looked up to might be an international thief….

image

Very high chance the image of Toichi was shaken quite a bit.

image

Though he did still stand by his dad in the end… it couldn’t have been the easiest decision he ever made. Getting a ton of information dropped on him, shaking one of his foundations, stepping into the world of a phantom thief… There’s a reason this Kid isn’t quite as sure, makes mistakes, has to build the poker face, and loses it far more easily than he might like.

And on a more off-canon note, this is why my Kaito is actually fairly unstable and borderline split-personality. Regardless of how well a job he does manage to do, and how easily he passes it off, this is too much for a high schooler whose only possible means of support is the assistant to his father who pulled him into this whole thing to begin with, and his mother who, even if he accepts the fact that she used to be a thief as well, is hardly ever actually around. Calls can only go so far. It’s a lot of pressure, evading both the oraganisation, the police, other random people out to harm Kid and hide his secrets from those around him, his best friend, her father, and the detective who is in his class who already suspects him of being Kid entirely.

I… just… I think a bit too much about how Toichi’s base for Kid was full of confidence, experience, and love, while Kaito’s was full of uncertainty and hate for the ones who killed his father.

So… I guess what I’m trying to say is… it annoys me just a tad when the anime tries to keep more with Kaito’s more loved image, the one that started the ‘no one gets hurt’ fandom policy and, though he makes a lot of mistakes, is still not as dark as Magic Kaito actually feels in the manga.)

  1. Name of your muse.
    Kuroba Kaito (Kaitou Kid)
  2. One picture you like best of your muse’s fc.

    image

  3. Two headcanons you have for your muse that you never told anyone.
    1) Well, it’s implied, but since I don’t believe I’ve ever actually said it out loud… Kid is the persona he falls into for control, whether over himself or other people. The thief may not be the default, but he is more dominant in most regards.
    2) While he disguises and lies all the time, Kid does try to keep with honestly when it counts. He’d only outright lie to protect others first, and then himself. Elsewise, he likes taking advantage of wording to make others think he meant one thing, when he never actually said it. He likes playing with expectations and tossing them away often.
  4. Three things that your muse loves doing in their free time.
    1) Practicing and planning magic tricks
    2) Gliding around at night
    3) Musing under the moonlight
  5. Four people that your muse loves
Hakuba, Shinichi, Aoko, (and this may be more than a little narcissistic…) himself (Well… his other selves in general… I think that may be cheating… But I don’t think he cares)
  6. Three (more) fond childhood memories.
    1) ‘Beating’ his father at a hand of poker when he asked to be taught to play (Toichi let him win)
    2) Visiting America because Toichi had a show in Vegas. He didn’t know much English at the time, but it was still fun.
    3) Tokyo Disneyland. Nuff said.
  7. Two things your muse regrets.
    1) Every death he couldn’t stop
    2) Having such a hard time accepting help from anyone, even if he knows he probably needs some…
  8. One thing they’d go through heaven or hell to save/change.
Change: Not having found Pandora yet. He really wouldn’t want to change anything else, whether about his past or his current life, because it’s what make him his current self.
  9. Tag ten people to do the same thing.
    *pokes reader* You’re it~

Your thoughts on Hakuba Saguru.

“Hmm… Well, he was a bit too arrogant and thought he always had everything planned perfectly. Which, normally, probably would be the case… because while he was incredibly annoying… especially with him casually calling me Kid while I’m not in costume… I do have to admit he’s good at what he does.

And I guess I’m happy he’s never actually said that he’s sure I’m Kid in public. Because even if he can’t catch me like that, it’d give me a lot more trouble… But being put up against a thief who doesn’t hesitate to throw logic aside obviously wasn’t something he expected. Tantei-san has thrown me off a few times as well, though, so it’s not like I can’t worry about him actually catching me one of these days.

At least his more annoying attitude from when he first showed up died down a lot, else I’d probably have ended up butting heads with him much more than I do already. …Though, he also seems like he’s been more helpful as of late… Not entirely sure why, though. I’d have figured things out on my own… Eventually…”

That day you dressed up as Shinichi for Ran. Thoughts on that?

“Wait, when did this happen?.”

“Which time do you mean? Because I’ve disguised as tantei-kun a few times… Though, I suppose the one I did it for Mouri-chan specifically would be that first time…

…It was nerve-wracking, to say the least. For many reasons. I only had heard of Kudo Shinchi through the news, so I was having to use a disguise I didn’t know quite as well as I would have liked… and having to guess at how he’d act around her, though the responses I got from the Black Star heist actually told me a lot in that respect. Just mixing his public image with how he thought about her. Tantei-kun himself would know that I was aware of his identity after he saw me. And there was always the fact that, if Mouri-chan had figured out I wasn’t really Kudo, I’d probably have ended up in pain. A lot of pain.

…But it was exciting, too. Not knowing exactly what to expect from them and getting the chance to help out in a small way. Because, while I’m still not sure of the exact details on what happened to him, I knew tantei-kun didn’t need much more added trouble. I know how keeping identities from someone you care about is like, after all… And if he really hadn’t told her yet, there had to be a good enough reason behind it to warrant a bit of help hiding it…”

Safari Ball!

Safari ball ~ Have you ever been to another country?

image

“Well, yes. America, that I can remember, though mom says she and my father took me with them around Europe when I was young. Too young to remember that, apparently. I’d like to travel more, but it’s easier to stay in Japan right now, while she does the searching abroad, and I haven’t really had much of a reason to go anywhere as of yet….”

Memories of Sorrow

x

Confetti flew through the air as the sound of cheering echoed from all around. Smiles and clapping, all directed at the man on stage, who took a bow, smiling as he always did, before setting the black box he had been using off to the side, spinning it upside down as he did, his assistant coming to take it backstage soon afterwards. As the magician, began preparing for the next trick, his eyes passed over the crowd and something flashed through his eyes for a moment, focusing in on the back of the room before he turned his attention back to what was left onstage.

The next part was an escape. One he’d done and had practiced at so many times he could perform it blindfolded. Which, he actually /had/ done before, if only in front of his family as a test.

Which is why the chaos that filled the room soon after he’d entered the suspended white box, shackled and tied as per usual, came as all the more of a shock to the yound child stood there, staring up at the stage while other people ran past him in panic.

What was going on? How had the fire started? Where was Jii-chan? Why had his father not come out yet? Why was no one trying to /help/ him?

It wasn’t until the boy felt a hand grab his arm and start to try and pull him away that he came out of the void his thoughts had been spiralling into and he protested. He faught against the insistent tug, yelling and reaching towards the stage, trying to get someone, /anyone/, to realise the magician hadn’t come out of the box. That he was still inside while the flames were crossing the stage hungrily.

But no one heard him above the sounds of the screaming and scared cries of the audience who, only minutes ago, hadn’t been able to turn away from the man they were now leaving behind. The pull slackened and a figure came to block his view of the platform, picking him up and throwing the child over a shoulder, taking him away, screaming and struggling. A head turned up one last time towards the stage, tears falling down and eyes widening as part of the rafters fell, debris and smoke completely hiding everything just before the boy was taken out.

He didn’t even notice when he was put down. Everything in his mind had gone silent as he stared at the building, eyes wide and unfocused, tears streaming down his face. A choke, and a trembling started. Then he slowly bent down. His arms reached across himself to grab tightly, almost painfully at each other, but he didn’t care. He couldn’t feel it. Nothing was hurting more than his heart right now, anyway.

“Tou-san…”

Memories of Sorrow

x

A part of him was still hoping this was a literal nightmare. That the time since the heist on that rainy night never actually happened. Never saw that accursed mask, nor spoke with the one behind it. Never met his on. Never learned everything.

At least then he wouldn’t be hurting so much right now.

He’d anticipated the chance the man wouldn’t listen. Nightmare had been working with and manipulating criminals for so long, it was inevitable that some of the darkness had grown too much, that he was too desperate to achieve his goal. Why should he listen to the words of a thief telling him to stop?

But the voice of the boy who was the reason behind Nightmare echoing though the building /did/ catch the thief off guard. And, apparently, the one aiming a gun at him.

Even with being in danger himself, it wasn’t until the man started to fall that he felt his heart stop. He didn’t need to think. Not about the gun, the fact that someone he cared about had been threatened by the other, that he’d killed people who had worked with him before, just because they learned his name.

He didn’t deserve death.

Finger wrapped tightly around the other’s hand. The sound of the gun hitting the ground below could barely be heard over the sound of blood rushing through his ears and his heart pounding in his chest. He strained to keep his grip on both the man below him and the broken railing beside him, knowing that there was a good chance he could be pulled over as well. If he could just convince the stubborn fool to let go of the opals and grab on with the other hand, then maybe-

His blood turned cold as he felt the glove slide off, eyes widening as he could only watch, helplessly, while the the man fell, cringing when his body hit the floor and blood started to pool behind his head.

There was no time to think, however. People were coming. The police, the detective, and…

Pain tore through him when he saw the boy, and he quickly brought up his card gun and took aim below.

A child, so much like himself in some ways, did not need to know that his father, whom he had admired so much and aspired to be like, was the very detested crime planner he was supposed to be stopping.

Especially not if there was a possibility of him learning /why/ Nightmare existed in the first place…

He fired the gun, knocking the mask of the criminal away to leave the man who had cared so much about his son that he had gone too far down into darkness.

The ace of spades.

How fitting, to mark the end of Nightmare.

But there was no humour in the thought. Not much thinking at all, really. As soon as he’d shot, the thief turned away and ran, jumping back into the sky from where he’d come in. Once he’d gotten a fair distance away, he lowered his head.

Coward.

All he could do was escape. He couldn’t do anything to help, couldn’t even face the boy whose life had just been broken. Broken like his was so long ago.

Except this time, if anyone was too be blamed for the death, it was him. If he’d just acted like the selfish criminal and not gotten involved, ignored how much they’d reminded him of his experiences, or had managed to convince the man to think of his own life at that moment…

When he finally managed to get home, the thief barely remembered to even lock the door before making his way to his room in a daze. He just wanted to sleep. Fall into an oblivion where he didn’t have to think about what had happened that night. It wouldn’t last long, and he’d have to face it again in the morning. Or afternoon. Whenever he felt he’d be able to get up again.

But for now, he climbed onto the bed, only removing his hat before pulling a pillow over to curl around, not even caring about being in full costume as his mind faded into welcome nothingness.

((hp au headcanons?

(I’m assuming you mean for Kai? *hopes this is correct since mun doesn’t know HP so well to have AU headcanons for just HP*

He’d definitely be a Hufflepuff, though I don’t think he’d be out of place in Ravenclaw or Gryffindor. Like the twins, he’d be a prankster, using both the mundane magic and the real stuff. One of those headcanons people have for muggle-born students AUs where they mess with people by using sleight of hand? Yeah, that’d be him. Though, Toichi would also be/have been a wizard, so he wouldn’t be from a completely magic-free family. (Much as I like Chikage, I imagine her being the type who doesn’t have magic herself, but accepts it without much question.)

Kai would try and make people think he could care less about studying, but secretly studies magic above the level he’s supposed to be learning. He wouldn’t like to misuse it, though, so would still prefer his usual type of tricks. Real magic can go wrong too badly for him to use it carelessly. The only person who knows he learns more advanced spells than he should is the Charms professor, because he noticed Kai use one he shouldn’t know, even though Kaito himself tried to play it off as one of his usual other tricks.

Before this gets too long, other random things are: He has friends in all of the other houses (not too surprising), he’s explored the castle quite a bit and knows where almost all secret passages are even without the Marauder’s map, he uses doves to deliver letters instead of an owl (yes, more than one, for if he gets any heavy packages and they’re usually with him, except at mail time.), and other subjects he excels in are transfiguration, flying, and history of magic.)
