The thief quickly lifted his head when he heard the voice.

Rather unnerving song to be singing at this time of night…

He looked around, not seeing where the song was coming from right away.

“Umm… Is someone there?”

He considered attacking again, but quickly abandoned the idea: he’d seen how fast that dude could be after all. He’ll have to backstab him.

He held the knife in his mouth, rose both hands, and clasped them. Immediately, the children jolted upright and looked around them like lost puppies.

”..Where am I?”

“Sanae? Payumi?”

“Mom, Dad, where are you?”

“It’s cold and it’s late. I want to go home.”

“Where did the snake go?”

“I hope you’re happy, fashionless magician.”

I’d be happier if I knew you were going behind bars…

The thief cautiously went back over to the door, opening it and motioning at the kids to come. To try and attract their attention a bit more, he made another dove appear.

“Don’t worry everyone. Sora here will make sure you all get back home…” He rose his hand to let the bird fly off, quickly shooting a glance back at the other as it circled around a couple of times outside before landing on the sidewalk in front of the house and cooing.

“And he tends to worry, so make sure you don’t leave him before you get there, okay?”

Really, Sora was just going to take them to the police, but he didn’t want the hypnotist knowing that. Even if he did plan on keeping his promise, the man probably wouldn’t like knowing that’s where they were going.

He looked around, not seeing where the song was coming from right away.

“Umm… Is someone there?”

“Of curse I did I value my life duh. Would you really potentially risk the lives of innocent children just because you’re not sure if I’m telling the truth? If you turn me in and I was saying the truth, you’ll have to deal with the death of dozen of kids by your fault.”

He hesitated a moment more before finally lowering his arm, still glaring at the other. Of course he wouldn’t potentially put anyone in danger, even if he really didn’t trust the other at all. The gun was still held tightly, though, since the other still had the knife…

”…Fine. I won’t call the police. Just let them go.“

He coughed at the smoke and glared, oh man if a glare could split lazers you’d have a hell of a hole in your chest.

…Frick he’d underestimated that clown.

“What about no.”

Shit shit shit think about something quick…

“If the police capture me, I swear to whatever you human believe in that nobody will ever find the kids already in my house. Is that what you want? Them dying slowly of dehydration?”

That made him pause. For multiple reasons.

Kid narrowed his eyes as the smoke was beginning to clear, but didn’t lower the card gun. There was no easy way of knowing whether or not the other was telling the truth, but did he really want to take the chance he wasn’t? And why did he specifically say ‘human’?

“….And how do I know you’re not just trying to get out of this? You seemed to pull that information out awfully fast as soon as you realised you were in trouble.”

He looked around, not seeing where the song was coming from right away.

“Umm… Is someone there?”

“You are too late, then.”

And he charged.

-well, yeah, that dude had a monocle, so logically he shouldn’t be able to see well, right? And in this costume, fighting or dodging would be difficult. He wasn’t even armed. He had all his chances.-

-That’s what he thought, at least.-

Kid quickly moved to one side, tossing the card at the ground. It exploded and a smokescreen filled the room, which he then used to move further from where he had been.

“Sorry to say, but I take quite a bit of pride in being able to say that I have a record of being on time, hypnotist-san. So…”

He quietly drew his gun, aiming at where he expected the man to be, but not yet pulling the trigger. Even if the other definitely didn’t have any good intentions, the thief didn’t want to attack just yet.

“I’d appreciate if you just dropped the weapon and let the police find you your own little spot in a cell.”

He looked around, not seeing where the song was coming from right away.

“…And yet, the next part is even better.”

He turned round, pulling out his knife, and growled.

“I really, really don’t like you, you know, mister no fashion taste magician.”

In his head, it was all clear. He was going to kill him. Then he’d take the kids, and eat enough to forget this horrible night. Yes.

“Well, I’m used to people not being a big fan of me, but I don’t think that’s any reason to poke fun at my costume.”

It was taunting, but the thief was in complete defensive mode right now, despite the lightness in his voice. A hand fell to his side in preparation to pull out the card gun quickly, but he didn’t want to alert the man to his having a weapon just yet. With the other, he made an ace of spades appear and held just in front of his face, eyes suddenly changing to glare daggers at the other, his voice also losing its humour.

“And if it’s all the same, I’d rather not have anyone grieving any time soon, if I can help it.”

“Oh, little chil-dren, cannot leave~ And for you your family will grieve~”

Ah, here they were. The man opened his house’s door and sneaked inside, leaving it open for the kids to follow. Now, some ropes…

…

Kid stopped in the doorway, forcing the others to wait behind him. The man had been singing the creepy song the whole time, yes…. But that line…

The thief looked up, eyes narrowed as he quickly moved his arms to make a couple of doves appear. They lighted upon the children’s shoulders and cooed to show that they were ready to help. Even he wasn’t sure how to break the hypnosis, the birds could either try and distract the kids or fly and get help. He allowed a small smile, before it vanished as he turned back to face the man, stepping inside the house and latching the door behind him.

“I’ll have to disagree on the leaving part, hypnotist-san.”

He looked around, not seeing where the song was coming from right away.

“Umm… Is someone there?”

He smirked. Finally he’d got rid of the problem. Well, partly -he’ll still have to eliminate the stranger later- but at least for now he wasn’t a threat anymore. He dared turning his back at him, walking toward the giggling children. He’d left them out of his grip for too long already.

“Now look at me, the pendant calls, back and forth your eyelids fall…”

The thief breathed an inward sigh of relief when the man turned away. Now that the pendulum wasn’t in his sight, it was much easier to stay focused. Seems that the song alone could only go so far…

He casually walked closer to the group, still pretending to be under the hypnosis, making sure to keep the coin out of sight. He considered trying to stop the kidnapper now, but there were multiple problems with most of the actions he had available. Knock out gas would be best, but as close as the other was to the children, he might be able to do something to them before actually falling asleep. And he still didn’t know what else the man might have on him….

So the best option would be to try and get the kids away from here.

“Umm… Is someone there?”

”..Right.”

Who knows, maybe if that stranger was young enough, it could work. Or at least make him dizzy to enough to flee with the kids. that was a wild bet,  but it’s not like he had a lot of other options anyway.

“Well then, look at the pendulum, would you. And open your ears wide.”

That said, he started to move the pendulum back and forth, slowly, oh so slowly…

And then he started to sing with an eery, inhuman voice.

“Oh, little children, please don’t squirm. Those ropes, I know, will hold you firm.”

Kid tried hard not to actually focus on the pendulum. To look off to the side or just above it. But for some reason, when it began moving, he couldn’t look away. His body relaxed, his eyes went back and forth with the small coin. And when the song started, they glazed over as his mind began to get clouded…

However, part of his mind was still aware that this was strange. Even as the fogginess spread, there was a distinct feeling of familiarity with what was happening…. Like something similar had been done to him before…

Three red lights flashed in his mind.

Hypnosis!

A surge of fear shot through him, bringing him back to awareness.

The thief used his poker face managed to maintain the unfocused stare, though. If he was going to try and get the kids away from this man, whom he was now positive had taken them, this would be his best and likely only opportunity….

Kid closed his eyes and giggled, smiling at the other, acting as best he could like he’d seen the children doing. Though he had ‘disguised’ a kid at least once before, this still felt very, very strange.

He looked around, not seeing where the song was coming from right away.

“Umm… Is someone there?”

He held back a grimace. While he knew some of the most basic tricks, his greatest point would always be hypnosis.

“If you really want, but you’ll be disappointed. I’m quite an amateur, you see. My best trick only works with children, unfortunately.”

To prove his point, he quickly moved the hand that wasn’t in his pocket to make his pendulum appear.

He eyed the man warily as the object was brought out. The hand remaining in the pocket had been noted, but it seemed like the other was willing to attempt a trick, thankfully. Though, a pendulum was an odd choice for a prop…

“Well, I’ve been told I’m rather childish,” he said, leaning forward with a grin, “And it wouldn’t hurt to try, right?”

The man took an unnoticeable step backward.

“I appreciate it, but I’ll have to refuse. It’s late enough, and I don’t want to take more of your time..I’ll keep the idea in mind, though.”

He chuckled, digging a hand in his pocket, looking for his knife. Just in case.

“I know a few tricks myself, after all.”

“Oh? Mind showing what you can do? As a fellow magician, I can’t help but be curious.”

The thief crossed his arms, still smiling at the man. “I tend to stay up quite late anyway. And as you said, if the kids are excited, they won’t be tired anytime soon. So I’m sure there’s enough time to perform a trick or two.”
