Nope. Nuh-uh. Thieves picking up the tiny detective was CLEARLY against the rules. Conan gasped and squirmed, little legs kicking at the air. “H—Hey, put me down!”

Threaten with soccer balls, you get picked up to where you can’t kick them. All’s fair in love and war, and there were no rules about picking up any tanteis~

“Maybe if you learn to stop threatening thieves with pain just for stopping by to chat, you can come down,” he said, humming and carefully lifting up the struggling detective over his head (just barely over his hat) to put him on his shoulders, keeping his hands on the other’s legs. He didn’t seem particularly worried that he just put an irritated chibi on himself.

“Until then, you can enjoy feeling tall~”

”Hmmmn, are you sure? People keep telling me I need to be more open-minded, so why prove whether or not you’re really a phantom?” He tried to remain innocent, but a nasty smirk twitched under his glasses, “Unless you’re scared.”

image

“…Never scared, tantei-kun… There’s just no need to test it like that.~”

A wide smirk and he quickly moves behind the other to pick him up and hug him.

“As you can see, I’m very much solid~”

”If you really are a ghost, then you wouldn’t mind me kicking a ball at you? It would go right through, wouldn’t it?”

“Ah…. N-not all ghosts are intangible, tantei-kun, so…. not necessarily…” And if it’s all the same, there doesn’t need to be testing to see whether this ‘phantom’ was tangible or not…

”That depends on who wins and what they want.” He pointed out. He, himself, didn’t plan on asking the thief for a damn thing — there was almost nothing he could do for him, unless he gave it some serious thought.

Still, he was bored and had nothing to do. There were no good cases, and he had a lot of pent of energy that even Ran was suggesting he work out in some way.

Sighing, the boy shrugged. “All right. I’m in.”

“Great!”

Kid raised a hand and, in one swift movement, made a card appear. The only words on it were a time, place, and date. It didn’t even have his signature or caricature. He set it beside him before standing on the railing, easily keeping his balance as he stretched a bit.

“I hope you don’t mind that it’s not a riddle this time. Wouldn’t want you to get lost, after all.~”

With a grin, the thief snapped his fingers and a cloud of smoke suddenly rose up.

“But don’t worry. There’ll be plenty of them later…”

And with that, he was gone, the cloud dissipating soon after the words were out. He may have said he’d give more information, but he never said he’d tell what exactly the game entailed. That would ruin the surprise.~

”Sure, but most people don’t offer servitude up front.” The boy retorted, a single brow making it way upward. Most people, as far as he knew, butted heads and egos before a risky bet was made — the prize usually being a favor or something of monetary value.

”You still haven’t explained what the game is, or do I have to agree first?”

image

“It may be a service, but it’s not servitude. And I have my reasons. Besides, there’s always a chance none of you win… which would be boring, but it’s possible. And yes, I’m not planning on giving any specifics until after you say you’ll join.”

   Well, now, that was interesting.

Conan’s curiosity about the concept and prize had been sated, but now he was beginning to wonder why the thief would want to dispose his talents onto him or another detective. He was renowned for being elusive and cunning, having escaped him and Nakamori on more than one occasion. Why promise temporary servitude to someone bent on capturing him?

”Yeah, but… why?” He slipped his legs over the window sill and stepped out onto the porch.

The thief lifted his head some when the other came out, but otherwise didn’t move. A small, amused laugh did leave him at the question, though.

“Hmm… You critics always wanting to know motives… Let’s just say I’m bored. That’s generally why people play games, isn’t it?”

No, that wasn’t his real reason. He actually had quite a few for wanting to do this. But none were one he was willing to give away right now.

Conan kept the unamused expression on his face, but his mind was beginning to whirl — try being insanely interested without appearing so. Go ahead. He’ll wait.

Poking his head back out the window and tossing the thief a glare, he considered for a moment what the consequences would be should he listen to the idea: he could get suckered into participating, yet again, in a childish competition that would likely end in disaster. If he didn’t listen, however, Hattori was likely to call him and tell him, anyway.

Either way, he was going to end up annoyed. And any chance to show-up Hattori was a welcomed chance.

   ”Tell me more, first.”

Kid tried hiding most of the smirk that wanted to come up. Might not have completely succeeded, but, oh well. It looked like he’d gotten the other’s curiosity.

“It wouldn’t be nearly as fun to tell you everything, tantei-kun.~ But I will say this. Whoever wins can have me do one thing for them. Barring giving away my identity, of course. And I don’t mean stealing, unless you tanteis just really want me too. Possibly collecting information, using my disguise skills, or something else… not necessarily breaking the law. An interesting prize, don’t you think?”

Conan was already sure that nothing good would continue to come out of the thief’s mouth. A ‘little’ game? When it came to KID, nothing was he did was considered little. Unless that was supposed to be a joke about his stature. Either way, the boy made it painfully obvious that he didn’t trust the guy.

”Not interested.” He said flatly, “I’m sure Hattori wouldn’t mind playing along, why don’t you go ask him?”

Though, he was feeling just a smidge curious as to what the game was.

The thief waved a hand dismissively.

“I was already planning on inviting tantei-han.”

He brought the hand back to rest on top of the other that was still on his knee, setting his head down on top of them and tilting his head slightly.

“But it would be better to have more people… are you sure you don’t want to participate? It’s a bit of a competition, and the prize for whoever wins isn’t too bad…”
