A reason? No, he didn’t have one. Simply an rush of affection urging him to act, and he didn’t particularly mind giving into it, pulling back from a hug slightly to run his fingers down the other’s arm to gently take hold of his wrist, holding the open hand in his.
“Thank you for for being so welcoming of my uninvited visits.”
One kiss, to the top of the thumb first.
“For staying by me and giving company when I needed it.”
Second, on the index.
“For never truly prying, and listening when I wanted to talk.”
Third, middle.
“For putting up with my occasional teasing~”
Fourth kiss to the ring finger, accompanied with a slight smirk.
“…And also putting up with the troubles that follow me for what I do.”
And the grin faded as he placed the fifth on the smallest fingertip. Kid paused a moment, only to pull up the other hand next, smile getting wider again.
“And I’m always glad to see you, with your adorable smile… easy-to-flush face… eyes that shine when you’re enjoying one of your mystery books… sharp mind that solves so many people’s problems… and these hands, while not quite as restless as mine, always are used for the best purpose. Picking out a book, pointing out the right person… and, at times, gracing this thief with a comforting touch.”
More soft kisses were given, once again, to each digit for every trait spoken, before he closed Shinichi’s hands together and held them in his own. Then he turned his eyes to the detective’s face, a warm and sincere smile on his lips before he leaned in and lightly, briefly pressed them against the other’s.
Had they not been in a hurry to get to safety, even if they were technically safe, he might have paid more attention to the fact Kaito had his hand. Might have wondered the significance of him continuing to hold it once they were past the smoke. He was probably just making sure he didn’t lose his way after all.
His head still felt a little weird in all honesty.
“What exactly happened to me back there?”
Kid glanced back at the other, then checked around before slowing the pace a touch. No one seemed to be following them… Still, he’d keep his guard up.
“Hypnosis. I don’t know what you saw… but you were standing in a trance when I got to you,” he answered, with a certainty that said this wasn’t the first time it’s come up. Though… it had been slightly different than the time with Akako, since she’d still been affected up until Spider had ended it. (Couldn’t speak for his own experience, he had no idea what had been going on outside of the illusion he’d been trapped in until Hakuba shocked him out of it with water.)
Shinichi hadn’t been completely under it…? Maybe he’d gotten to the detective too soon, and interrupted it… That… Dangerous as the ability was, it’d be nice if it could be stopped before working at all, actually. Better to not happen at all, but still.
He was fine with that, he found, nodding faintly at his thoughts. He was actually rather okay with them not splitting up, the question had just been lingering in his mind. Because on a normal heist they would be splitting up.
But this hadn’t been a normal heist like it should have been.
“Sounds good to me then.” He was trying not to worry about possibly running into trouble again. And he tended to attract trouble like there was no tomorrow.
“I trust your judgement after all.”
Kid smiled appreciatively at that, and didn’t waste any more time before he took the detective’s hand and let the smoke bomb fall. As soon as the smoke filled the air, he pulled Shinichi along, mentally going through the map in his head to find a better route than he’d been going before. And he’ll keep holding even after making it outside the smoke.
The thief had no plans on losing track of the other or slowing down until he thought they were far enough away to lose any trouble that might try following.
[Meanwhile, the source of worry simply smirked as the two ran off. No intention of doing anything else, just poking… observing.. and apparently making people more cautious than they needed to be. That was fine, better to overestimate than underestimate, but still amusing. But the assassin had satisfied some curiosity, and the two had a higher guard up now, they wouldn’t be met with any more mind tricks from him tonight.]
Napping at heists seemed to be becoming a reoccurring thing for Shinichi lately, or at least coming to heists not in the best of health. This time he’d actually napped while waiting for the thief and when he woke it was to the rustling of that well known cape. Hoping the master thief hadn’t realized he had been napping, he moved to try and stand, feeling off.
He wasn’t getting sick was he? He hoped not, KID wouldn’t be pleased at all.
“Took you long enough,” he teased, the long and fluffy tail behind him swishing playfully. He had no idea it was there. Nor that there were a matching pair of ears settled in his hair.
His head ducked just slightly at the feel of his hand on his head again before realizing he was petting him of sorts. It felt nice and he pressed against his hand some. He was glad he forgave him.
“I’d only make it a habit if you wanted it to be one,” he quipped, a small smirk on his face. Though the scritching easily wiped it away, purring picking up once more. How unfair it was that he could win him over so easily with nice touches to his ears. It was almost cheating.
“It’s fine, we both weren’t paying attention.”
He hummed as the gentle scratching continued. Cheating or not, so long as the other liked it and it wasn’t too much for the neko-tantei again, he’d keep this up. And he really hadn’t meant to overwhelm in the first place. One thing to be flustered and thrown off, another to lose some control in response to scritches.
“Thanks. …Though if you do make that a habit, I at least hope it’s at times I’d would expect it more~”
The thief moves to place a small kiss on the detective’s lips before shifting to place his forehead against the other’s and wrapping his arms lightly around Shinichi’s waist, smiling softly.
“Well it’s better then waking up alone,” he murmured, trying to keep sadness from his tone. He’d rather be grumpy at him for waking him to say a proper goodbye then to wake up to an empty and cold bed without so much as a good bye.
Shinichi let out a small noise as KID held him close, pressing against the wonderful scratch against his back and his eyes closed tight. He loved getting to be this close to the thief. His thief.
“Of course it’s a yes.”
“Thanks.”
A faint hum at the end of the word was the last noise before the thief let silence fall. …And he’s vaguely surprised Shinichi hadn’t pressed more on why the sudden closeness, without the usual teasing. Sure, the visits have been happening more consistently after heists, but… Hm. Maybe he’d caught onto the same fact Kid had, and still picked up now.
It felt lonely coming back to an empty house.
…Sorry that he can’t stay beyond the night, tantei-kun. …Seemed this thief was still too much of a coward to break the barrier between his night life and his normal one, for all that some masks slipped when he was with the detective.
Kid sighed in relief as he stepped outside, gently rubbing an eye and closing the door behind him. Cutting the power had gone well, but he’d already done it so often in past heists that Nakamouri-keibu had some flood lights prepared…
That hadn’t been fun.
Even with the black contacts he’d taken to using, the lights were enough to make everything he saw fade into white… He was lucky he hadn’t run into anything after that, though he was certain he’d come close more than a few times. It seemed he still only see best when it was naturally dark. Not too bad, considering he worked best at night, but it was still annoying for school and other things he had to do during the day… Did help with the electric bill, though.
The thief paused his musings as he caught the sound of shuffling feet, glancing off to the side before smirking. It had been a while since he’d seen the detective, since he hadn’t wanted to plan anything until he’d dealt with his vision problem to some degree. And with all the problems he’d been having during the heist, he hadn’t been able to tell if the other had come or not.
“Long time no see, tantei-kun.~ Did you miss me?~”
He’d been there and he’d been paying special attention. The thief had been off the entire time and he hadn’t been anticipating him to turn the lights off to pull off the heist. Not that it was the first time, nor the last, but he would have thought the thief would have done something a bit more since it had been his first heist in a bit.
Then there was the way he had seemed more thrown off then usual by the flood lights.
“Miss you?” he echoed playfully, pose relaxed though his eyes were sharp and trained on the thief. He’d figure out what was wrong with him, if anything. “I suppose I did, if I showed up to your heist.”
“Hmm… I suppose that’s true. It does make me feel special, being the thief you’ll take time out of your oh-so busy nights to come see.” Kid threw a grin at Shinichi before raising the gem up to check it, casual and looking as though he was admiring it in front of the other like normal.
…Eeeexcept that it wasn’t. Oops… One aspect of his altered sight he hadn’t considered. Day was blinding white, night looked like day, and pitch black looked like a dimly lit room… Useful, but he wouldn’t be able to tell even if it did glow like this, unless it drastically changed the colour…
The thief’s air of confidence faltered, briefly, as he realised this, though it didn’t last for long. Shaken a little, that it affected even this important part, the reason he did this job, but not the end of his work entirely. …He could get Jii to check the targets later. Though, that did mean he wouldn’t be able to make calls on whether to leave the jewels behind at heists, or immediately return them until they could be checked… No ‘fine, you just want the gem back, and I don’t need it, so here’ situations from on out. …Umm…
“Unfortunately, if you wanted the gem, I’m afraid this is one I want to keep a while longer,” he continued, lowering his arm with the same amount of false laxness. “So I hope that ‘missing me’ really was for me and not the shinies I liked to leave behind for you.”
Send a symbol and my muse will show up in your’s house at 3AM… ✯ – with a sudden urge to cuddle
He knew the detective should have been back home by now, but he’d already checked all of the rooms…
Well, all but one.
The thief silently opened the door to the library, giving an small sigh upon seeing that, sure enough, the teen seemed to be scanning through the shelves.
Doesn’t he ever take a break?
Kid sneaked up behind Shinichi and slid his arms under the other’s, gently squeezing him as he placed his head on the detective’s shoulder.
“Isn’t it a bit late to be doing research, tantei-kun?”
There was a squeak this time as they ended up on the floor, Shinichi more in the thief’s lap then on the floor. And then there were lips on his neck, moving up the skin and then there was a brush against his cheek and he wondered if the thief could feel the difference in temperature as he knew his face had to be glowing with how red he was.
“Y-yes, I suppose I did, didn’t I. Though I had hoped, maybe, you wouldn’t be so difficult to predict in what you were up to.” He really should have known better. Clearly.
The thief hummed and pulled the other closer, resting his head on Shinichi’s shoulder. Seemed to be completely at ease with the other, for all that he was essentially tossing someone who should be his enemy around as he pleased. Looking at occupations.
Like that had ever stopped him before. And careful, detective, he may end up calling you cute again.
“When have I ever been easy to predict, tantei-kun? I’ll give that you’re always good at figuring out my plans, but I believe I’ve always been able to counter when you did…”
Maybe it was about time they started, if… what ever that was that had happened was any indication. They really needed to be more careful if this game was going to continue. And he didn’t know about the thief but Shinichi knew he wanted it to.
“That sounds like a good idea.” It also didn’t sound like the thief was wanting to split up? Maybe? He almost hoped not.
He didn’t know if he could handle having to split up from him again in fear it might happen all over again. He didn’t have the mental facilities to go through that again.
“Should we split up?” he asked anyway, eyes on the thief’s hand that didn’t hold the smoke bomb.
Blinked. Ah… After that happened, the thought of splitting up hadn’t crossed his mind… Now he had to think, though.
Normally, it’d be smarter to split up and meet back (probably at Shinichi’s house) later, instead of them going together while one of them was purposefully noticeable. …And Spider’s never actually attacked more than once after he’s left… but Kid hadn’t seen him here to know he’s left yet. And normally the only reason he couldn’t try again was because the police came. The assassin could still be around… (Didn’t that give a chill… he came this way because there wouldn’t be police in the way, but suddenly felt much more vulnerable without a gang of officers around.)
“No,” Kid finally decided, “At least, not right now. We can later, if you want, but we should make sure both of us get away from here without any problems, at least.”
Back? Had he been some where? Brows furrowed together and the last however long (and it must have been long because KID did not get nervous other wise) it had been seemed almost a blur.
“I know,” he murmured, reaching out to put a hand on the thief’s face as if to make sure it was actually him. He had never caught a glimpse of whoever had been talking to him but he had to make sure that the voice wasn’t using his thief against him.
Not that he hadn’t been trying to do so anyway.
“Sorry, I’m not sure what happened.” A frown and he tried to shove it all away, focus on the male before him. Kaito had a way of making it all better in the end.
“We should get going.” Didn’t want anyone coming up on them.
The released hand followed the detective’s, fingers loosely hanging off the other’s wrist, but made no move to pull away from the touch. Then the other hand let go as Kid took a breath, making himself relax.
…They normally didn’t bring up much of the more dangerous parts of their jobs with each other, aside from the general knowledge danger exists… But… If Spider started trying to use his illusions to drag Shinichi into this, he’d need to warn the detective about the man.
But not right now. The other was right, they shouldn’t stay around here, for more reasons than one…
“…Yeah.” Another pause, then he reached into a pocket for a smoke bomb, a faint (almost tired) smirk coming up as he pulled it out. “But we might should leave under some cover right now. Just in case trouble is still around.”
