“And enjoy it I shall! ~”

Fingers singled out the roses and carefully lifted them from the bouquet.

“I take it that I can expect you at the next heist, then? I’ll look forward to it, tantei-kun~”

“N-no, I suppose not.”

Brighter still at the kiss to his cheek, blue eyes wide behind his silver frames. KID did many things to get a reaction out of him, but the kiss was new. And while it wasn’t unpleasant he wondered why the thief would do such an action. Then again he’d probably done it just to see what would happen.

“Some how I have the feeling you stop by often as it is. I’d at least like to actually know when you are.” His tone was deadpanned but there was a hit of a smirk on his face.

“I would never enter someone’s home uninvited, tantei-kun. That you would even think such a thing pains me,” the thief said in mock indignation, a hand dramatically going to his chest as he shook his head in disappointment. A smile was just barely being hidden behind the mask, though, both at Shinichi’s physical response to the kiss and the verbal one to his comment. He may have stopped by every now and again. Purely as part of his unofficial job of looking after his detectives, of course. No other reason. At all.

“How about this? I’ll leave a note with my symbol on it when I plan on visiting.” And now, the smirk came up. “Of course, whether you notice it or not will be based on how observant you are.~”

“Why are you leaving?”

Shinichi flinched at the sound of the thief’s voice, wishing to god it had been any one but him to ask. He could lie to just about anyone, had been doing so for so long, but KID wasn’t one of those people. Their entire relationship, of sorts, had been honest (though that didn’t mean there weren’t secrets or things unsaid). And now he was going to have to lie about this, couldn’t let him know.

“Figures you would seek me out upon hearing I’m leaving,” he sighed out, keeping his back to the thief. Maybe he could manage if he didn’t look at him? “I… have a new case I’m being sent on. It’ll take me out of the country.”

Kid looked sadly at the detective, a hand unconsciously clenching at his side. While it had never been aimed at him, he’d heard the excuse before, and always when something involved danger. And it was highly doubtful this wasn’t a lie, considering Shinichi couldn’t even look him in the eye. He knew the detective said it to not get others involved, but he never thought he’d be on the receiving end of it….

“Tantei-kun, please don’t…”

Don’t go? Don’t lie? There were a few choices he had for what to say, but his voice wouldn’t let him finish. Instead, he just stared at the other for a moment before looking down in silence.

Shinichi frowned as the other seemed to refuse to talk to him, make any noise at him for whatever reason. Considering the master thief’s line of work he could be dead silent when he wished to be. “I don’t know why you’re like this, KID, but… As much as I may want to I’m not going to force you. You have your reasons and perhaps you’ll tell me when you’re ready. I hope you’ll allow me to sit with you?” Of course he asked this as he was sitting down, eyes forward. KID would talk when he wanted.

He glanced at the detective out of the corner of his eye as the other sat beside him and a nod was given to show that the company was allowed. Really, it was preferred, but the thief still didn’t say a word. After a few moments of staring at the ground, he rested his head on Shinichi’s shoulder and slowly closed his eyes, visibly relaxing.

He was glad to see a smile at least, and gave a small one in return. Obviously he wasn’t completely horrible at trying to cheer someone up. Or maybe he was only good at trying to cheer KID up. He did wish the other would talk to him though, he found he was missing the sound of the thief’s voice.

Then he found himself suddenly in a hug and he found himself blushing, trying not to squeak in surprise because he was tired of actually squeaking whenever the thief did something without warning. Of course he assumed that was kind of the point of why KID did those things but still. A heart beat later and Shinichi snuggled into the hug, getting comfortable. There wasn’t really a chance of getting caught by anyone tonight so why not enjoy it?

When Shinichi responded to the hug, the thief’s smile grew a bit wider. The detective felt nice, and warm, and was giving no small amount of comfort. His disappointment was slowly fading just from being close to the other, though he continued to just hold Shinichi. As late as he’d stayed up preparing for the heist the night before, Kid might have been beginning to nod off, his trust in the detective outweighing any danger that came to mind.

✯ – with a sudden urge to cuddle

He knew the detective should have been back home by now, but he’d already checked all of the rooms…

Well, all but one.

The thief silently opened the door to the library, giving an small sigh upon seeing that, sure enough, the teen seemed to be scanning through the shelves.

Doesn’t he ever take a break?

Kid sneaked up behind Shinichi and slid his arms under the other’s, gently squeezing him as he placed his head on the detective’s shoulder.

“Isn’t it a bit late to be doing research, tantei-kun?”

His mind found itself curious about Hakuba now. If his fellow detective wasn’t really chasing after KID any more, who was he chasing after. He had half (of a half) of a mind to ask but then there was pressure against his neck and he was certain the thief had picked up pretty quickly how sensitive a spot that was.

And then his vision went fuzzy again, this time because his glasses were gone and he knew he was a little brighter in color because of it. He wasn’t seen without them much any more so for them to be removed and his face bare to some one else… It was a little like being naked in some ways.

And then KID’s voice was right in his ear and he was certain, so certain, his brain had died and he wanted to melt just a little in the thief’s hold. Because damn if the thief didn’t have a voice that made it hard to concentrate on much of anything except him.

“T-that’s not stopped you before, thief,” he replied, coughing a little to try and regain something of himself. “But fine. Yes. It’s permission.”

He tried to hold back. He really did. But…

The thief let out a sudden light laugh, pulling Shinichi back into a tight hug and rubbing against his face, making sure not to damage the glasses in his hand.

“Jeeze… You are just too cute!”

Darn it….. He hadn’t wanted to fall out of the persona, but really, the flustered detective couldn’t help but make Kid want to squeeze and play with him more.

He knew he shouldn’t be there in his current condition, face seemingly permanently stained red and he hoped he could lie convincingly enough to the thief he asked. He couldn’t help that his hormones had been going a little more haywire then usual, a side effect from the Apotoxin Haibara had told him. This really was the worst time to come to a KID heist.

Maybe he should go, he could likely leave before KID showed up since he seemed to be having fun toying with the Task Force. Turning to go with that decision in mind, he hoped maybe he could actually leave before the thief showed up and he’d have to try and explain his fevered look and uh… physical evidence to what exactly was wrong with the detective.

“I should have never promised I’d try to make it to all of his heists,” he murmured to himself.

He knew KID wasn’t going to buy it. The king of lies and deception himself? Yea, Shinichi couldn’t lie to save himself unless he had time to actually plan something. Or he was cute and adorable as Conan and could get away with terrible lies.

Feeling the hand against his forehead, gloved or not, made him heat up a little more and he cursed the fact the thief cared. H-he really should stop touching him, he was already showing physical evidence of his issue (thank god the thief hadn’t looked down yet), he didn’t need to show it more so.

“I-it’s just a warm night, I’m not sick if that’s what you’re worried about.”

Kid reluctantly pulled his hand away, still not really believing the detective. But it was true that, other than the heat and the red face, there didn’t seem to be any signs of Shinichi being ill… Still didn’t explain the weird behaviour, though.

“…If you say so….”

The thief looked the detective in the eyes for a minute before sighing and giving a small smile, before reaching out to pull Shinichi into a hug.

“Just don’t think that you have to come to every heist. I won’t get too offended if you can’t make it because of a cold or something, you know.”

“Isn’t it a bit late to be doing research, tantei-kun?”

His search for a book was forgotten at the chance for conversation, something he didn’t get much any more. And it always seemed to hold more meaning when it came from the thief. He attributed it to the fact KID’s intelligence was on par with his.

“Hakuba tries rather hard, I think. He just seems unfortunate enough to actually fall for your traps, and chase after you along with the Task Force.” Hattori didn’t try too hard, he thought. But then he’d only ever gone because he’d gone too.

And then his brain seemed to short circuit a moment at the feel of lips brushing against his neck. His eyes had widened again behind his glasses, the frames sliding down his nose some, and he knew he was blushing brighter (darker?) then he had been before. W-what was KID up to?

“A-ah…” Did he really want to stop the thief if it involved more of that? More of what? His vision went a little fuzzy as he tried to re-engage his brain. “S-sure?”

The thief gave a thoughtful hum as he pushed against the other’s neck.

“It’s true Hakuba tries more, but I’m not the one he’s really chasing, so it doesn’t count.”

He slowly raised one arm to carefully remove the detective’s glasses. As he lowered it, he turned his head slightly to speak softly into Shinichi’s ear.

“And that didn’t seem very certain, tantei-kun~”

Shinichi frowned as the other seemed to refuse to talk to him, make any noise at him for whatever reason. Considering the master thief’s line of work he could be dead silent when he wished to be. “I don’t know why you’re like this, KID, but… As much as I may want to I’m not going to force you. He took the jewel without even looking at the thief, letting his fingers brush the gloved one’s that belonged to his white clad thief as his hand curled around the target. He could almost feel the disappointment KID was feeling and he moved to try and press against him a little to show it would be okay.

“Don’t worry, ne? I know you’ll find it eventually, Lady Luck favors you after all. She’s just going to make you work for it is all."

Not his worst attempt at cheering someone up, but man that sounded lame as hell. He could almost hear the thief teasing him for his poor attempt.

Kid glanced up at the detective from his shoulder, finally showing a smile, at least. There was still disappointment in his eyes, but he was glad Shinichi was trying to be some comfort.

The thief’s eyes closed again and he reached over to capture the other in a gentle side hug.

He raised an eyebrow at that, glancing back to the thief. “You get bored when I’m not around? And what makes me so special anyway? You don’t seem to enjoy Hakuba-san’s presence nearly as much, nor Hattori’s…” Which was odd Shinichi thought, his previous verbal train of thought derailing a bit as it moved to a mental train of thought.

And of course there were a bunch of mysteries, a lot of Sherlock Holmes to be precise. Also some books written by the author Edogawa Rampo. Kaito would also find some books with the last name of Kudo written on them as well.

“I suppose you can stay if you like, it’s not like you’re opposed to doing what you want regardless of what others say.” He didn’t really mind, honest. He just sucked at voicing such things aloud. “I don’t have any complaints.”

A snort left him at the mention of Hakuba’s and Hattori’s ‘presences’. Largely because they were opposite problems. He saw the blond detective almost every day, while he rarely held heists in Osaka. They almost had opposite personalities, too… If anything, Shinichi was somewhere in between them both.

He turned his head away from the book slightly to look sideways at the detective.

“Challenge, tantei-kun. The other tantei’s either can’t or don’t try as hard to catch me. One doesn’t have me as their main target and the other can’t attend most of my heists. And if you already think I just do whatever I want…”

Kid pulled the detective in more and brushed his lips against the detective’s neck before nuzzling again.

“Does that mean I have your permission to do so?”

He’d let out a startled noise when the door opened, not fast enough to move out of the way of the person charging through and he almost collided with the white clad thief. Thankfully KID had better reflexes and managed to move out of the way with circling steps. Of course he was still too close and Shinichi couldn’t move away fast enough.

“A-ah, I’m fine,” he replied a little too hastily to the thief’s question, trying to turn his back to him quickly. He wasn’t being nearly as subtle as he would have liked to try to be but then he also was starting to have problems thinking straight. And it only was getting the worse the closer the thief was to him.

“I uh… I just got an odd text from some random stranger is all. Wrong number.” Was that an obvious lie? God above he was bad at this.

The thief raised an eyebrow at his response. He didn’t believe it for a second, but did have to wonder why the detective was lying… The other was acting a bit strange…

Kid moved around to stand directly in front of the detective and placed a gloved hand on his forehead.

“Are you sure you’re fine? Because you feel rather warm…”

Blinking a moment, he realized probably how that came out a little different then he intended and found himself frustrated with himself. He didn’t want the thief thinking that was the only reason he ever came to his heists. Turning to look at the thief, he was surprised when he was suddenly closer and smirking at him. He swallowed a noise of surprise but couldn’t stop the blush from returning to his face.

“Don’t over work yourself for my sake, idiot,” he puffed out having still not stepped back some. “And I think I’m already a little overwhelmed with my work if I’m confessing how much of a stress relief your heists are."

But there was a tiny hint of a smile there, touched by how concerned the thief seemed to be for him. “I think there’s something wrong with your head if you’re so worried about a detective, KID.” He was teasing, promise.

This time, Kid noticed when the detective’s face take on a red tinge and the corners of his mouth turned up just a bit more. If that was how he got just from the thief being close…

"Nothing wrong with being concerned about someone who obviously needs some,” he said, quickly moving in to place a light kiss on the other’s cheek before standing straight.

“So… that’s a no to the extra heists… but I didn’t hear anything against stopping by every so often~”
