”Yep! She’s five, and the only thing she seems interested in is magic and princess.” She kept her eyes on the cards, still stricken with awe and some jealously, when he offered to teach her. Madison blinked at the teen, then grinned wide.

”You’d do that, really? That would be amazin’! Nothin’ too hard, though, right?”

“Of course! And don’t worry, they’re really simple. They might actually be a bit easy to figure out, but I guarantee she’ll love them.”

Kaito smiled and collected the cards in one hand, fanning out five of them in the back with their faces turned toward her.

“How about a demonstration? Pick 1, 2, 3, 4, or 5.” he said, tapping each of the cards as he counted, starting from his right.

Another faint gasp escaped her, regardless of the fact that he had done the trick one-too-many times already. It was still entertaining, even though she had focused all of her attention on catching how the trick worked.

”Eh? Oh! I love magic.” She grinned wide and took the rose — flowers were always appreciated, “My niece does, too. She’s been askin’ me t’ do some, but I’ve only been able t’ do little con tricks.”

“A niece, huh?”

Kaito paused to think for a moment, absentmindedly getting his other cards out and shooting them from one hand to the other.

“I could teach you a few tricks, if you’d like.” The cards arced above his head as he smiled back at her.

”Do it again.” She had seen the trick tens — no, hundreds — of times before, but she couldn’t quite wrap her brain around how he was doing it. “Please.”

“Sure!”

Kaito pulled out another card, showing it to her. It was a ten of hearts, but the face didn’t matter. He spun the card around a few times before it became obscured with smoke. When it cleared, a red rose had taken the card’s place.

He held it out to her with a grin.

“You like magic? Or is it just this trick that caught your interest?”
