”I need t’ start practicin’ if I’m gonna impress m’ niece, then. It was really sweet ‘a ya t’ teach me somethin’. If it makes her smile, then I owe y’.” The auburnette gave Kaito a sweet smile before she bounced forward and gave him a quick peck on the cheek.

                                             ”Thanks.”

Stepping back, she gave him a small wave and started down the street. “I’ll see y’ around.”

The magician definitely hadn’t been expecting that. A light redness came to his face at the kiss, though he tried acting as if it wasn’t there.

“Feel free to come by again anytime,” he said, waving back with a small smile.

”A heist…?” Madison gave the piece of paper a look of doubt, though she really didn’t have a reason to believe that Kaito was lying to her. “Why th’ heck did ‘e give me instructions fer a heist…? It’s not like I know Kid personally.”

She frowned and resisted the urge to snatch the paper back and give it another read. If there was a code like he said, then it had flown right over her head. Codes were never her thing — at least, she didn’t think she was smart enough to figure them out.

”What are y’ gonna do with it?” She finally asked after another moment or two of silence, “I mean, it’s fer Kid, ain’t it? And it’s tellin’ y’ how t’ steal somethin’. Maybe we should take it t’ th’ police?”

Now that was the question… Why did the guy give it to her specifically? She technically didn’t know Kid. Kaito, yes, but not the thief. And if he suspected of the magician of being Kid, there were other people that would have been easier to give it to…

Kaito leaned back and put a hand behind his head, closing his eyes. The card twirled absently between his fingers.

“We could. They might not be able to do much, though, since this hasn’t actually gotten to Kid…”

… Actually…

The card stilled and a wide grin spread across his face.

“So… why not see if we can show it to him? It’s not like he keeps what he steals anyway, and I’m sure Nakamouri-keibu would love an extra chance at catching the thief. It’d probably be more useful than just handing the card over.”

Madison had propped her elbows up, cheeks resting in her hands and eyes wandering from the paper to Kaito’s face. She thought it was strange that someone would ask her that — what made him think that she would know someone that conniving and handsome?

”Huh? What’s interesting? Did I miss something?” Madison leaned forward and tried to get another peek at the note, since something in the back of her head had told her that she was missing something. Without a thieves mind-set, the instructions had only sounded like a trick.

With a small while, she pouted to the magician. “Y’ gotta tell me.”

He tore his eyes away from the paper, blinking at her. For a moment, his thief persona had almost come out. And with good reason….

“Ah, well, it’s a bit difficult to explain…” Kaito scratched his cheek and glanced back at the card. Since it was a heist request, he wasn’t sure if it would be the best idea to tell her what was written… But on the other hand…

The magician stared absently at the table for a few moments. If Madison took it to the police, they might be able to help try and find the man who sent it. He wasn’t sure if the person who sent it had any ill intentions or not, but who they were would still be useful to know.

“Basically, the card has a code saying the date and time for Kid to go steal something. It also probably says the target… but I haven’t figured that part out quite yet…”

”It makes people happy, right? I don’t know many people that don’t smile when they see a magic trick, so spreadin’ it around seems like a good idea t’ me. Although…”

She snickered and lifted a brow at Kaito.

”If I c’n master this trick, I might have t’ try some more. Not sayin’ I’m gonna be as good as you, but y’ might have some competition.” She didn’t mean it, of course. She wasn’t even aware of many female magicians, but that may have been for the fact that most magicians she saw were male… and attractive.

“I’d welcome the challenge, if it meant more people would be interested in magic.”

He tilted his head and grinned at her. “And even if you don’t have as good of skills as the pros, at least you have the better mindset. That counts for quite a bit, in my opinion.”

♚ – with a cunning plan

Madison toyed with the edge of the card in her hand, lower lip taken between her teeth. Something about the words written on the card seemed off to her, but she couldn’t quite understand why. “I’ve read th’ dang thing over an’ over, but it still sounds like a trick t’ me. I don’t even know why th’ guy handed it t’ me…”

She gave a nervous look to the magician in front of her and held the card out for him to take. Hours earlier, a man had asked her if she knew anyone by the name of Phantom Thief Kid. Her answer had been a confused no, but the man had insisted that she take the card anyway.

Without thinking, her first thought had been to read what was written on it. It was none of her business what was written on it, but the instructions had sounded vaguely like a magic trick. That in mind, her second thought was to contact Kaito.

If she had known it was plans for a heist, she wouldn’t have handed it to anyone but the police. Instead, she was blissfully unaware of what it was and who she was handing it to.

Kaito had been curious when Madison said she’d been given the card. Especially at the mention that it had been intended for Kid.

Why did he even think she’d be able to get it to the thief?

Well, by some luck, she had managed to do exactly as asked, albeit unknowingly.

“Yeah, that does sound a bit weird…” he commented, taking the paper from her hand and scanning it, “Even if you did know who Kid was, I doubt the guy would’ve actually expected you to say that. Kid is a thief, after all….”

As he read the note, a smirk began to spread on the magician’s face. He didn’t even notice when he spoke the next words softly, but still loud enough for her to hear.

“Hmm… now this is interesting….”

Madison didn’t doubt for a second that he was an amazing magician if he was the one inspiring Kaito’s own talents. She felt herself growing just a little jealous at the idea of being raised by a magician — not that there hadn’t been plenty of fun and laughs from her own father.

A small shrug, and she gave him a sweet smile. “I think y’ probably have, t’ him. I mean, yer great at magic, but yer nice too. I don’t know many magicians that would take th’ time t’ teach a stranger tricks when asked t’.”

Kaito blinked and then gave a slightly embarrassed smile. While the magician normally took compliments well, to have someone say that he might be as good as his dad…

“Well, I’ll admit, most known magicians don’t like to give away secrets, even on the simple tricks. They don’t want to lose business if people use the basics to try and figure out the more complicated ones.” He raised a hand and scratched his cheek.

“I myself think that it’s silly. If it makes people happy, why not teach some magic?”

”Guess that makes sense. I’ll have t’ keep an eye out fer ya once yer outta school — I’d hate t’ miss any of yer shows.” Oh, if only she knew. At the name, however, her face fell.

Kuroba Toichi. She scratched the side of her face and thought. The name did sound a little familiar, but she couldn’t quite figure out why. A few minutes of thought, and she blamed rapid channel surfing — she must have heard the name while trying to find something interesting to watch.

”I feel like I heard that name before, but I can’t remember where. Sorry. Still, he had to be pretty amazin’.”

A small amount of disappointment flashed through his eyes, but he supposed it wasn’t too surprising. Eight years had passed, after all. Guess he was just used to being around those who had known him…

“It’s fine. But if you can, you should look him up. I may be a bit biased, but he was known as one of the world’s best magicians. I just hope that I’ll be able to reach his level one day.”

”Nah,” she shook her head and pulled her lips up in a smile, “you taught me a trick, it’d be rude ‘a me t’ ditch ya now.”

The florist reached up and gave her chin a thoughtful tap, “You said you’ve been doin’ this fer ten years, right? I’ve never heard yer name before now. D’ y’ not preform?”

“Well, I put on shows every now and then, but I’m not exactly a professional. I’m still in high school, after all.”

He grinned at her, with no small amount of pride in his voice as he continued.

“But you’ve probably heard of my father, Kuroba Toichi. I may not have a reputation yet, but his is still pretty well known.”

It was going to take her a moment of silence and staring at the ground before the color even began to wash from her face. Compliments, as easy as they were to give, were always hard to take with the florist. She was grateful, but it wasn’t often that she heard them.

”T—Thanks. If all magicians are that charmin’, I might have t’ steer clear.” She giggled with a slight fanning of her hand near her face.

Kaito was probably having a bit too much fun with this, but Madison was nice to talk to. With people like Hakuba and Aoko, a part of him was always on guard, simply because his job required him to be. So he welcomed the simple chat.

“I hope I’m not included in the ones to avoid. I wouldn’t want to run you off, now.”
