15. My character has killed yours and is haunted with guilt.
The thief’s eyes widened, confident grin transforming into a look of terrified shock and he felt his breath stop as the detective fell to the ground.
No…
“Hakuba!”
The card gun fell from his hand as he rushed over to the other’s side. Blood was pouring out from the detective’s neck and pooling beneath him. Kid immediately put a hand over the wound in an effort to stop the flow, is white gloves quickly turning a dark crimson.
This wasn’t supposed to happen!
On the floor nearby, the edge on the ace of spades glinted coldly, a line of red coating one of its sides. Somehow, it had still managed to hit its intended target: a small, hidden camera that had been attached to the wall. The thief’s only intention had been to keep any unwanted eyes from spying on another one of his heists. But then Hakuba had suddenly stepped into the line of fire, and-
“Oi, Hakuba! Say something!”
You can’t die!
“Why… do you do it?”
He jerked back in surprise as the blond finally spoke. The detective opened one eye, the other still closed in pain, his chest heaving as it tried to draw in more oxygen.
“Wh-what?”
“You… wanted me to… say something.”
“Hakuba…”
Please…
The detective slowly raised an arm up to the thief’s face. Kid followed the hand with his eyes, but made no move to stop him, even as he curled his fingers around the monocle and removed it, placing the hand on his chest.
“You can’t… get out of it this time… Kuroba.”
“…I suppose not. You caught me.”
I don’t want to lose anyone else…
Kaito gave a small smile, but his poker face was beginning to break as tears began to gather in his eyes.
“But I don’t think I have enough time to answer you. Would you mind… asking my father instead?”
Hakuba’s eyes widened slightly, before they suddenly began to close. Kaito noticed the breaths had become much shallower than they had been earlier.
No…
“Certainly…”
His voice could barely be heard by this time, to the point where the magician was forced to lean down to hear the last words, one arm reaching back to cradle his head.
“Farewell… Kaito…”
After a few minutes, the breathing stopped, but Kid continued to hold the detective, bangs covering his eyes as tears silently streamed down his face.
I’m sorry.
